What have you done? There are a lot of problems that can be associated with this. My first guess would be the oxygen sensor. Its hard to say for sure as I do not know what type of vehicle you have. But the other things can be mass air flow sensor, fuel pressure regulator, clogged fuel filter, fuel pump going bad, power control module, faulty injectors.
Your first step in diagnosing what is going on would be to check your fuel pressure and see what is going on. After that you can go ahead and check your oxygen sensor. Check the sensor's signal voltmeter reading. An oxygen sensor interprets an increase in oxygen as a fuel lean condition and emits a signal close to 200mV (0.20 V). If the sensor doesn't respond accordingly or takes time to respond, the sensor isn't working properly.

Have trouble code po171 on my 2000 chevy venture, looking for possible solutions

gtford64,

P0171 indicates the computer has detected a "lean engine condition". Sorry to say you couldn't have gotten a worse code. By that I mean there are sooo many things that can cause a P0171
However I'll just run down a few of the more common causes:

1 - Look for any obvious vacuum leaks around the engine area. Vacuum leaks will definetley
cause a lean condition which will trigger a check engine light and code P0171
Especially check around the PCV system and where the EGR valve mounts to the intake.

2 - Check your oxygen sensor wiring to make sure it is not chaffed and shorted. This will force a
lean condition and set P0171. O2 sensors are located on your exhaust system pipes and
manifold.

3 - A constant or intermittent engine miss will trigger this code. Check for fouled or shorted
spark plugs or weak spark plug wires.

4 - Low fuel pressure will also trigger P0171. Check your fuel pressure if thats possibe. If it's low,
check to make sure your fuel filter is not restricted. Otherwise, you may have a weak fuel
pump!

Try these tips first. If not successful, we'll take it 1 step further. Good luck!

I have p0171 and p0174 codes for the last month. have replace the IAC valve, cleaned the MAF and added fuel system cleaner. Want to know what to replace next for the 1999 windstar with a 3.8 engine.

If I remember right from every code reader I have looked at P0171 and P0174 are oxygen sensors. Start there and see where it takes you. If after replacing those, the codes come back something else is causing them to read lean or rich. Also, could have been a one time thing and the code could be stuck in your computer, to get rid of it remove both battery cables and hold them together metal to metal for about 10 seconds. Then reattach them the light on the dash should be gone, but might come back shortly.
