Is it just one tail light? If it is just one tail light, take the bulb back out, and clean the inside where the contacts are. It could be something as simple as just using a little bit of steel wool to clean it or, it could be a fuse if both of your tail lights are out. Try hitting your hazards, do your hazards come on? Does your one blinker come on do both blinkers come on do your brake lights come on.

both lights went out, & I checked my fuses & even changed them, & replaced the bulbs. The brake lights still work, I just don't have any tail lights

The hazards still work & directional.

Okay that is good to know, a tail light has two elements or I should say filaments, one is a steady which would be your tail lights and II would be for flashers, so it's obviously not a fuse, so I would say check your contacts, but I would also start with you're getting yet another replacement bulb because the one you got maybe out it could be a defect from wherever you got it to begin with. Try that

  • TStevens Apr 28, 2017

I would not think it was the switch. I would take back the bulbs and just get yet one more replacement set comma if you're going to an auto store, have them look up the correct bulb and make sure that that's what they're sending you to get. Not that it's really rocket science to figure that out LOL you can go to any big box stores well and get the same ones for cheaper. However, if you are going to return them which, I would do, I'll just exchange them for another set. And if that does not work, then definitely check your contacts clean it with steel wool or the green scrubby pad, anything that has an abrasive surface to it. And try it again, if that does not work then I would say you are correct that it would be a switch or a wire has become disconnected and you have to remove your stereo to see which one it might be :-( hopefully this all came out right and you can decipher it, I am using voice to text

    Okay, I will. Thank you

  • TStevens Apr 28, 2017

You bet, I hope it helps, oh, and just real quick? When I'm saying to clean it I'm referring to the lightbulb with pushy in and twist oh! Are they Twisted completely to the right or to the left whichever side they need to go in because if I am thinking correctly you have to push in and twist to the right to lock it in correct? If that's the case make sure that that connection right there is good in tight and clean, so again getting back to my original thought, when you're cleaning with an abrasive surface like steel wall, I'm referring to cleaning the socket where the bulb will go. Okay, now I have to get my day started good luck

Ok, so it has to be the switch or the wiring. I put a new car stereo in there. Do you think that might have something to do with it?

  • TStevens Apr 28, 2017

Mmmmmmm...no, not if u have flashers and brake..i would say you got bad bulbs.. the two elements. ....i mean.. i guess it COULD be from the install of the stereo...but most likely its the bulb was bad when u bought it. The elements are so tiny the littlest drop could brake em. Did you get the right bulbs?

Can I just replace the third brake light bulb only ..just the bulb.on a 2005 Chevy Malibu LS.or do I have to replace the hole brake light itself..

from inside the trunk looking up at the light First, gently work the gray, carpet like cover loose from the area around the tail light ,(this may give you a little trouble). Once you have done this, you will see three silver nuts. These must be unscrewed. The lower left nut must be accessed through a hole next to where the trunk lid fits. (The screws are permanently attached to the lens housing so will not drop into obscurity when the nuts are removed). After removing the nuts, GENTLY work the lens housing away from the car. You may need a screw driver to unseat the housing, but just be gentle.

You will find three bulbs inside the lens. The brake light bulb is on the lower right side. Simply pull the old bulb out and insert the new one.

Just reverse these directions to reassemble the housing.

I would say that the tail lamp isn't plugged in but- if it is follow the wiring from the tail lamp forward there must be a break in the wiring -maybe someone cut the wires to patch in towing lights - cheers Denny

The tail lights on my 1998 malibu ls have been giving me problems! I always have to buy and replace bulbs. The socket melts the plastic of the light bulbs. What is the cause of this?

Strange... Not positive what would cause this, but I would be sure you're using dioelectric grease on the new bulbs when you replace them. I apply it quite liberally so there's more than enough on there. That will keep water out of the connection and help insulate the electric charge and could solve you're problem if you're not using any. It's sold at the auto store at the counter in a small package.

Good luck!

No signal lights at all and no emergency flashers

you need to check the "combination turn signal/hazard flasher/daytime running lights module"
it is located in the junction block, the junction block is adjacent to and left of the steering column, you need to remove the lower dash panel below the steering column, then remove the steel knee brace.
