SOURCE: changing the plugs and wires ?

no, the plugs and wires are very easy to replace, the back wires may seem difficult, but just reach your hand very slightly behind the UIM and you can feel the top of the plug boot, maybe a 20 minute job for all 6

I have a 2002 mercury cougar V6 automatic and I know what the problem is. My car needs to have the transmission pan taken out and replaced along with the gasket. My dad and I want to fix it ourselves but...

easy job. Just loosen pan bolts enough to let the fluid start draining from one end. As more drains, keep loosening the pan bolts till you can remove pan and finish draining what's left in the pan. At this time, most people would also change the transmission filter body: it's right on bottom of trans. when the pan is removed, easily accesible. Parts stores sell a kit with new filter and pan gasket included. Anyway, now you are ready to install new pan gasket. Clean gasket mating surfaces as clean as you possibly can. let no oil or fluid get back on there. Place gasket on (most don't recommend adding sealant or gasket compound). Put pan on with all bolts fingertight. Then starting from center outward, start tightening them down to torque specs-it'd be pretty light torque, like around 20 ft-lbs-might want to ask a ford mech. what torque specs are. When done, refill ****** and check for leaks after running car.

HOW TO FIX A BLOWN HEAD GASKIT?

Buy a gasket kit for the upper end. Remove the valve cover intake and exhaust manifolds. Remove the head bolts. Remove head and clean up block from old gasket material. Take the head to a machinist and make sure that it is not warped. If it is warped either replace the head with a new one or have it machined true. Install new gasket and get torque specs with new head bolts and follow torque sequence using the correct torque specs. Clean exhaust, intake and valve cover of old gaskets. install new gaskets and torque according to specifications.

I need to change the valve cover gaskets on a 1996

Valve covers are simple (if you have easy access). They normally have about 8-10 bolts surrounding the gasket. Remove these bolts and it comes right off. Remove the old gasket (do not use razor) with putty knife or gasket remover then install the new one. Usually specs are about 20-25ft lbs. You snug them not torque the bolts. The gasket does all the sealing.
