Need to have vehicle scanned for trouble code most auto stores offer this service for free the loss of power is limp mode the vehicle is protecting itself

Testimonial: "yes we know this but they get no reading and it is difficult to drive it there when the codes are on"

their should be a code stored --if you get a no comunication reading need to also check fuse to obdll--the vehicle in limp mode is to get you safely of road since engine will restrict itself to about 1500 rpms but you should be able to retrieve a code

Engine light is on then a wrench light comes on for awhile. When this happens the car slows down to a crawl.2012 ford tauras

The wrench symbol light is a warning light for the electronic throttle control system . Drive by wire ! The system uses electrical inputs from gas pedal sensors to the engine computer ,then by the voltage signal inputs the PCM - engine computer controls a electric motor to open throttle blade . This allows more air to enter the engine , the PCM can see that increase in air volume by the inputs from the mass air flow sensor . The PCM will add more fuel so you can go faster . Cool ! When the light comes on and the vehicle slows down , it's gone into limp mode . The PCM saw a voltage input it didn't like . There are two position senors in the gas pedal assembly and there are two throttle position sensors in the throttle body on the engine . Drive by Wire training Check out a few of these training videos ! GM ,Ford , Toyota , doesn't matter all work the same .

Stalls intermittently, wrench icon lights up under tach.

Problem with the electronic throttle control .
It should be noted that the ETC system includes a wrench light on the instrument cluster that illuminates when a fault is detected. Faults are also accompanied by DTCS and the "Check Engine Soon" light. Your best bet is to take your vehicle to a reputable ASE certified repair shop .
Overview The Generation II (Gen II) Torque Based Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) is a hardware and software strategy that delivers a transmission output shaft torque (via throttle angle) based on driver demand (pedal position). It utilizes an electronic throttle body, the PCM and a accelerator pedal assembly to control throttle opening and engine torque. The ETC system basically replaces the standard cable operated accelerator pedal, idle air control (IAC) motor, 3-wire throttle position sensor (TPS) and mechanical throttle body .

07 Ford freestyle replaced ETB position sensor and both converters wrench light and check engine comes on after about 10 miles car goes into lymp mode no more than 20mph sometimes turning off resets

If this is "fly by wire" throttle, it must be synced with gas pedal. Gas pedal units are so prone to failure Lokar makes a replacement pedal assembly far superior to stock unit.

I have a 2010 exolorer. The throttle sensor has been replaced 3 times in 9 months. Wrench and engine light always come on. It has been replaced at Ford dealerships. Am I just unlucky???

Usually the wrench light is a light stating that you need your oil changed or your tires rotated, basic maintenance work on your car. To clear that light turn your car to the on position but not running. Push the gas and brake pedal at the same time and hold them. Wait until the wrench light goes away and then you can release the pedals. As for the throttle sensor the only advice I can give you is that to find out if it is a recall and if it is then take is to a certified Ford dealer and they will take care of your problem. I Hope this helps

It would be good to know the make, year and model of the van to do a diagnosis. I'll take a stab in the dark, High reving could be caused by a faulty idle air control motor, common on a Ford. Is the Service Engine Soon light on? A malfuntioning Throttle position sensor will cause a high idle. I wish I had more info so I could be of help, Good luck, Gary
