YES, the PLASTIC Bushing stays, you just pop the Linkage out from the Inside and it presses back in

Shift Linkage for 1991 Mercury is loose

Your shifter bushings are worn out. Very easy fix. You can get shifter bushings from NAPA for about $2 ea, you need 4 of them. Drive the car onto ramps. Under the car there is a long rod that connects the shifter to the transmission. Unbolt the part connected to the shifter, remove old bushings (if they are still there), install new. Same for the where the shift rod connects to the transmission. 30 minute job, and it will shift great...Chris

Sounds like the linkage is jammed follow the cable to the transmission look to see if anything is stopping the linkage or if the linkage is damaged check your brake lite switch this controls the shift solenoid this may not be releasing to allow you to shift when pressing on the brake

My 1992 mercury topaz shift hard when coming to a stop. recently had transmission replaced. maybe missing transmission shift cable. is there such a part

unit has shift linkage between throttle and transmission linkage, it has plastic bushings that hold it in place, they will get brittle with time and break, allowing linkage to come off or be out of adjustment. Have whoever rebuilt it have a look at them and replace them. There plastic, cost should be a few dollars.

Car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

Transmission gets jerky like it can't decide whether to shift or not When shifting down manually the jerky diminishes

Try spraying all the linkages & or cable at throttle linkage & at side of transmission with WD-40 or similar, to get things loosened up, then give a coat of white lithium grease or similar spray to keep it lubed up.
Engine off, wheels blocked etc.when you go under eh? safety first.
That may be all you need, if not get back to us.

check the linkage for excessive play if the rubbers are worn out replace them and if you can put the car on the hoist disconnect the linkage under , start the car with another person inside the car to depress the clutch , try each gear at a time to isolate the problem whether its from the transmission or the linkage.
