SOURCE: leaking excessive amounts of power steering fluid

you Could find a new or rebuilt rack for two or three hundred bucks plus about two hours of labor. Then you will need to have a wheel alignment. So around $500-$600 total. Good Luck.

Rack pinion

There is one adjustment to the steering gear, but this doesn't remove very much play in the steering. And once set, I have never seen them back off ( it's the big nut on the back of the rack, break it loose, then turn the inner nut, Just a little through. You get it to tight and it will be hard to turn). If you have a lot of play, look at the tierod ends, inner and out. There are also two universal joints on the steering shaft that could cause a lot of play. One by the rack and one under the dash. There are bushings/bearing that hold the steering shaft in place, These don't cause much left or right play, they will cause the steering wheel to be sloppy at the column.

How to adjust steering on 1988 plymouth reliant?

if you have too much free play the rack & pinion steering maybe worn out and needs to be replaced as there is no adjustment on these like the older cars. you should check the rag joint as it could be worn. its located at the bottom of the steering colume were it connects to the rack & pinion steering. it looks like a small U joint.

Both inner tie rods r bad on my 2002 ford taurus.. i would like to try and replace them myself and save a few bucks.... i'm not too mechanically inclined, any help would be appreciated

The inner tie rod end is attached to the steering "rack". It doesn't take any "special" tools but since the steering rack is attached at the rear of the engine compartment, it is extremely awkward to do. I would recommend this job be taken to a shop that you trust. It is not that hard to mess up the steering rack with the wrong tools and then you have to replace the whole steering rack.

The left side tie rod seems to have slop on the rack & pinion side. Tie rod outter end is good.what is it?

Worn inner tie rod joint,on the steering rack

If you go to an alignment only shop, not some
chain store, with an alignment rack, they will
change it for you, if it can be done

Then you have to set all the front end adjustments

Don't let them pitch you, a complete rack assy
Moog-- makes those inner tie rods, and you put your
good outer joint on it

Hard steering very hard and replced the power steering pump today

check the steering joint in the steering shaft (the shaft from steering wheel to steering rack.) the joint may be binding. the rack could be bad. also you could have an issue with a ball joint.

Steps to replace steering componets

Jack up car, remove wheels, pull cotter pins out of outer tie rod ends, tap tie rod ends till joint pops out, next unhook bolt that holds steering wheel to the rack and pinion, disconnect the power steering hose and drain fluid in a can, next remove mounting bolts from the rack and pinion that holds it to the frame, if the exhaust is not in the way yo can get it out without to much trouble, after removing the hoses and the steering knuckle drop the unit down in one piece, book time calls for 4 hours to remove and more time if you replace the inner tie rod ends, go buy a rebuilt unit at the parts store will cost about $400 fo a rebuilt unit, replace bot inner and outer tie rod ends, to install is the reverse procedure, the steering wheel shaft is keyed for it to fit in one way make sure it is pointing straight and the steering rack is centered get that started first then bolt up hook up lines and tie rod ends, then adjust tie rod ends to get alignment close, you can turn the wheels one at a time with a round file to make a mark on the tire and do both sides then with a tape measure check on the two lines on the wheels front and rear it should be no more than 1/8 towed out in the front if it is more adjust then take it to a alignment shop and get a four wheel alignment.

i think steering gear has to be removed to get rubber bellows off to access tie rod.

DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY Tie Rod and Bellows SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED Description Tool Number Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B
Disassembly
  1. NOTE: Drill out mounting holes in holding fixture with a 9/16 inch drill to allow the power rack and pinion steering gear assembly mounting bolts to fit.

Mount power rack and pinion steering gear assembly in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B.
  1. Remove tie rod ends (3A130).
  1. sve~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Use care not to damage bellows. If bellows are damaged, this will allow contamination into the steering gear and cause leakage.
Remove four clamps retaining bellows to steering gear housing (3548) and front wheel spindle tie rods (3280). Discard clamps if damaged or excessively corroded.
  1. NOTE: Steering gear does not use rivets or roll pins between the inner front wheel spindle tie rod and rack.

Remove bellows along with power steering gear rack tube (3K762).
  1. Position power rack and pinion steering gear so that several steering gear teeth are exposed. Hold steering gear sector shaft (3575) with an adjustable wrench on end teeth only while loosening ball joint nuts.
Assembly
  1. Expose several steering gear teeth and hold steering gear with adjustable wrench.
  1. Tighten each front wheel spindle tie rod separately to 90-110 Nm (67-81 lb-ft).
  1. Thoroughly clean steering gear and steering gear housing bore of any foreign material. Any abrasive material is extremely harmful to high-pressure oil seals.
  1. Apply Steering Gear Grease C3AZ-19578-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESW-M1C87-A to groove in front wheel spindle tie rod where tie rod bellows clamp to front wheel spindle tie rod and uniformly to inner diameter of tie rod bellows before installation. This allows for toe-in adjustment without twisting tie rod bellows.
  1. Install tie rod bellows and power steering gear rack tube. Make sure power steering gear rack tube is positioned as shown.
