1998 mercury mystique suddenly lost compression after starting up. it is a v6 2.5.

I started the car and it suddenly shut down. coil pack tested ok, it has spark and the timing chains are in tack with correct timing marks and it is getting fuel. Started up and shut down immediately.

I agree with Mr Perkins possible blown head gasket. Also did you pull the valve covers and verify the valves are timed correctly, that is the most common thing to cause this sudden loss of cylinder pressure.

1999 mercury mystique cylinder 2 misfire ! Changed gasket, plugs, wires, and coil pack and problem still exist !!! Please help !!!

Okay kevin, the first thing is to make sure there is no vacuum leak, start the car and look and listen around for a hissing sound.if no leak is found then we will move on to the next test which would be a compression test, this test will tell you if the cylinder has compression and will help with the next step. seeing that you replaced the plugs wires and coil pack, if you have good compression then the injector would be the next step. check the connector on injector, if all looks good then the next step would be to swap injectors from that # 2 cylinder with #4 and then drive the car and if light comes back have it scanned and see if the misfire moved to cylinder #4. if it did move then you will be sure it is the injector. do compression test first , test all cylinders, make sure to have all plugs out and unplug coil pack connector when doing compression test. write me back with the results. good day

Thermostat?

sounds like the head gasket is no good.pressure is getting into the coolant and overpressurising the resevoir.
if coolant is in the oil,low oil pressure triggered the oil light and check engine trigger results from lost compression.
a compression test will tell you.take a look at the coolant,is there oil in it?

Wont start

will what have you checked for dose it have spark , dose it have fuel? if it will not start with starting fuild i would say that you have no spark . go to one of the plug wires remove it from the spark plug install a spark checker you can buy one at any parts store . crank mtr do you have spark. if not check another one that way you can rule out the coil pack still no spark may have a bad crank sensor . at this time i would take it in to a repair shop so they can test that item . unless you want to replace it and take a risk that it may not solve your problem good luck kdc744
