The filler pipe might be partly blocked especially if the car has had new paintwork in the area of the filler.
If it isn't blocked then perhaps the breather is. Fuel tanks are often strange shapes that don't naturally fill very well and so the top is vented, usually to a point somewhere in the upper portion of the filler pipe, via a hose typically of around half to three-quarters of an inch diameter.
If the vent hose is blocked or restricted an air pressure will build in the tank while filling and slow the process down.

My intake when pumping gasoline is gurgling and filling up and shutting off the pump handle...In my 1999 Daewoo Leganza.....What to do to fix?

I tell everybody to check evap system with this problem. Check fill pipe and vent tube, where applicable, for obstruction.
When filling up, the air in the tank has to go somewhere or it will burp back up the fill tube and shut off the pump.

Gas tank is always refusing to take gas.

Its a vapor lock....you have to fill it up and it will go away or I've seen people drive in circles at the gas station trying to get it to release.

My work truck does this as well. Pulling out the nozzle doesnt work either. I know it sounds wierd, but try turning the nozzle sideways or upside down when filling the tank. Works well with my work truck.....

Loosing power when drining

Hi Jennifer-
I believe I may be able to help you with the gas spillage you are having when filling the tank. This happened on my 1998 Toyota Camry.
One day, even though I was low on fuel, the attendant had trouble adding gas to my tank. Gas would spill during filling or the nozzle would click off (as though it was full) even though it was not. I had to stand there myself and slowly add gas until the tank was full.
I learned that my car had a thin vent tube that would run from the gas tank to the gas tank opening. As gas is rushing into the tank during filling, the air that is being displaced from the gas tank escapes through this tube. This tube had rusted closed a bit and was restricting the air flow escaping from the tank during pumping causing the problems I described. Once this tube was replaced, my problem was solved!
Hope this helps!

Gas kicks back when fillling my 99 taurus is it my canister

When filling your tank, if the fill hose kicks off and/or gas kicks back up the tube it's an indication that the evaporative emissions vent tube is plugged, the cannister vent valve is not working correctly, or that there is a restriction in the fill pipe/hose. Unless the tank or pipe was recently worked on or part of an accident, you can eliminate it. I've found several concerns involing the vent tube and cannister vent valve. Spiders like to make webs inside of these items and the web blocks the air from escaping. When you fill your tank, the air inside needs to go somewhere. If it can't escape, it will cause the gas to back up and shut off the fill handle or kick gas back. There are ways to check this function with a scan tool and pressure machine but you can also do a visual inspection by disconnecting the valve and looking for webs or debris. You can also run water though the open line or blow shop air though to be sure it's clear. Good luck, if you can't leave four thumbs up, please ask for more information. Have a great day!

Trouble filling gas tank

If your having trouble filling the fuel tank. Consider a few things first, Have you tried holding the filler nozzle at a different angle? Have you had any resent repairs done to the fuel tank and/or filler nozzle? Are you trying to fill a fuel tank that is already full?
If none of the above suggestions apply to your problem then you may have an obstruction down inside the filler collar or the vent tube that runs parallel with the filler tube.
