My info says you have passlock security system. No pellet or transponder in the key. It's the tumbler that communicates with security system.

I have a 2001 Pontiac sunfire and the ignition will not turn so I can replace it. It is stuck in the off position. I can remove the key. How do I go about getting the lock cylinder out?

The battery must be fully charged, you must be sitting in the car, your foot must be on the brake and the car must be in Park. Then your ignition key will turn. Pontiac are funny like that, my sister in law had a Sunbird.

If you do need a new cylinder, get a dealership to do it as the Sunfire almost certainly has immobilizer chips that will need pairing. There is one in the key and one in the lock.

To replace, you just remove all the junk around the lock, by the screws underneath, and split the top cover and bottom cover. The lock is secured by long screws and a clip to the wiring harness.

Replacement key

If your key has a plus sign symbol ( + ) on both sides of it, then it must have an electronic chip and it needs to be programmed. The key looks just like any other car key, except for the plus symbol that is on it.

Theft system light on in a 2004 pontiac sunfire car wont turn on

did you use a key without a chip in it as this will set the theft system,if so use a key that has the chip in it.if you used the right key then you can try turning the key to the on position and leave it for i think 3 minutes then turn it off for 5 seconds then on for 3 minutes again then off then back on for 3 minutes then off then the next time when you turn it on try to start it.

96 pontiac sunfire use chiped keys?

they don't have an electronic chip, it is a piece of resistive wire near the base of the key shaft, u must read that resistive value to get the right key.

Hi there i went to start the car i have a 1998 sunfire and i turned the key the car wond over but didnt start ,then itried the car again but didnt start. i have anti thetf so my question is , is there...

First check with locale Pontiac dealer giving your full vin number of car to determine if it has anti-theit. feature. If so, there is a chip in key to allow it to start. May require a new chip key cut from vin if chip went bad if that is at all possible. Never heard of a chip going bad but anything is possible.

2001 pontiac sunfire wont start just keeps turning over light on dash board that looks like a lock keeps coming on don't know what this is. Fuel pump is working.

on a similar problem i had occured it is the theft lock that GM uses. You have to put the key in the ignition turn to ACC wait ten minutes and turn it off. You MUST do this three times and then the theft lock will turn off. Once that is out of the way it SHOULD start.

Put in new stereo in 2001 Pontiac Sunfire now have no Panel operation-all panel lights on but no ppower to controls have been told I need to increase a fuse size but which one?

Did you use a special wire harness? GM connected some computer system wiring with the stereo system, so if you replace this, there will be no chime when you open your door with the headlights on or keys in the ignition...and some other warning stuff. This special harness can be bought, but it is expensive (around 80-150$). Go to electronics store and ask for one. Anyways, hope this helps.
