You will need to bring #1 piston in the firing order to the top and make sure the rotor in the dist. cap is pointing to #1in the firing order. One way to tell if the piston is to the top is to take a straw and put in the spark plug hole and the piston will trap the straw when at the top. Just be sure to remove the straw when done an not to cut it into.

Put the Crankshaft to TDC, then roll it back a quarter turn to allow the Camshaft to be rotated into the proper position. Once the camshaft is correct, roll the crankshaft back to TDC and install belt. Having your crank at TDC will not allow your valves to open and close (interference engine).

How do I know when my camshafts are top dead center the outter timing pulley was loosened stupidly before we could mark anything

Not to worry. The cam gear has marks on it already. When the cams are aligned at Top Dead Center (TDC) the keway for the pulley will be pointing UP and the marks on the edge of the pully will be lined up with the valve cover sealing surface of the cylinder hed. (See picture below)

Is it top dead center or bottom

Top dead center and bottom dead center also known as ( TDC) and (BDC) Are two different positions of the piston while an engine is running. TDC is where the piston is as high as it can go in the cylinder and BDC is as low as the piston can go in the cylinder.

How do you set top dead center on a lanos

TDC is when the number 1 cylinder is at top dead center. You can do a preliminary adjustment with a rod into the spark plug hole. If the head isn't on yet, just turn it to the top. Align the timing marks and put your chain on.

2001 kia optima 2.5L setting the timing

TDC stands for Top Dead Center, however it is only to set the cylinder number ! at TDC, if yu know where the timing marks are align the crank pulley mark to the "0" of the timing mark, usually this can be achieved by setting the crank shaft doel pin to twelve 0 clock position.
