Check the connector at the brake light switch above the brake pedal arm, the wires break inside the outer plastic insulator and this kill the brake light circuit. You can buy a replacement connector form Ford for the brake light switch.

SOURCE: My 2002 Mercury Sable will not shift into gear,

Wasn't there a recall for the sensor/part that keeps the gear shift from moving when your foot is not on the brake? Did you ever take your car back to have this replaced?

SOURCE: 97' mercury sable the gear shifter will not shift

Sounds like the safety switch that allows it to shift out of park with brake pedal applied is faulty.

SOURCE: 2002 mercury sable wont go into gear. shifter

ok sounds like the transmission might be your problem
first you would need to change the transmission filer by pulling the transmission plate and draining and replace filter and fluids new fluids prefferably. if that doesnt fix it. you could have a sensor or computer part out only real way to know is to take to shop to get looked at. hope this helps good luck

SOURCE: 2002 mercury sable brake light

With the vehicle off, turn the key to the on position and see if there is an ABS light (usually yellow/amber). If so, the brake light is related to the emergency brake and the rear calipers aren't done correctly. If no ABS light, the brake light is most likely the indicator for the ABS system. a sensor is most likely unplugged, damaged or just knocked out of calibration with the ABS drum.

Mercury sable gear shiftier jammed in park

Found this for a '93
Check that the brake lights work. The neutral park solenoid needs to see an input from the brake light switch before it allows the transmission to be taken out of park. If the brake lights don't work check the switch and fuses. If not the solenoid that allows the shift linkage out of park may have failed. Nearly every car has a mechanical override to allow the transmission to be shifted out of Park.

And this for a 2002
More than likely the BOO (brake on/off) switch located on the brake pedal, or it's connector is the problem. Check to see if the brake lights are working. If not, you can disconnect the BOO switch and jump the wires together. If the brake lights come on then, it should shift out of park.

So your's should be the same.

My 1998 mercury sable will not shift out of park and I have changed the brake shift interlock and it still won't shift and also don't have brake lights

If you don't have brake lights then the park lock will not release. The system gets power from the brake light circuit. Based on my knowledge in Ford repair (retired dealer technician) the brake light switch is defective or the wire at the switch is broken inside the plastic insulator, also make sure there is power to the brake light switch, use a 12 volt test light to check that, about $5.00 to buy. They make new connectors and of course the switch can be had at any parts store for about $6.00

I can't get my 2002 mercury sable out of park what

This is most likely due to the transmission - brake lockout. I'm not sure if it's a relay or a switch on the Sable but whichever it has - switch or relay - has failed. Transmission has to get signal that brake is fully pressed to release to shift, and yours isn't getting that signal. I suggest you re-post for help with the transmission lockout.

Gear shift is stuck on park

Be sure to check ALL fuses. Next check to see brake lights come on when brake pedal is press to check brake light switch. If this doesn't work you may have a mechanical problem inside shifter housing.

1996 mercury sable starts after being charged but next day is dead again

there is a Safety Recall Notice
01S08Grease used on the adjustable pedal assembly may enter the brake lamp switch and contaminate the contacts. This may cause one or more of the following symptoms to occur:
-Brake lights stay illuminated or are inoperative.
-Shift Interlock disabled (will be able to shift out of "Park" position without depressing the brakes.
-Speed Control will not activate.
-Cannot shift the vehicle out of "Park."
-ABS Warning light illuminates on vehicles with ABS
-Battery Discharged."

I cannot shift my 98 Sable out of park into a gear after it starts, if I turn the engine off then turn the key to on (not engaging the starter) the gear shift can be moved to neutral then the engine starts...

Sounds like a problem with the brake light switch. Do the brake lights work? It is a problem with the shift interlock system. It is controlled by the brake light switch on the brake pedal bracket.

My 2002 Mercury Sable will not shift into gear, will shift out of park, but will not go into any gear.

How many miles and how does your transmission fluid look?

Get car ot normal oper. temps and put on level ground. Put trans thru all gears with foot on brake. Put into park, leave running and check level. If level is low, this could be part or all of your problem. If level is fine and trans fluid is not brown or burnt, you have an electronic problem.

If fluid checks ok, let me know if you have a Check engine light on, ABS light, etc.

Hope that helps.
