Never use starting fluid on an engine with glow-plugs. You could cause alot of damage. Many problem areas of this engine can cause the concern you have. Probably the only one you could fix yourself is to replace the fuel filter if it is clogged. I only recommend to use a Motorcraft filter because it has the best rubber seal to prevent leaking.

Maybe the camshaft position sensor. The wires under the valvecover maybe broken. Do you have a code-reader? Many excellent gasoline mechanics cannot work on these diesels. Cheaper to bite the bullet and let a factory technician work on these complicated computerized engines. Just do not use any more ether with glow-plugs.

What's making my 96 corolla shut off while driving down the road or waiting on a light, and then doesn't want to restart when before it would?

The airflow meter in the throttle body needs to be cleaned. There is a special spray cleaner for this. WARNING: Do not use any other kind of cleaner for this or severe damage to the airflow meter will happen.

I have a 99 ford ranger that will not start unless you spray it with ether. Just one spray it starts right up and will run till you shut it off. But if you drive it it won't shift gears. Any...

well you seem to have a problem with your air intake as you shouldnt need ether to start it also if it isnt shifting gears it could be a mechanical or computer issue all in all you need a mechanic.
