What has happened is that the link rod connector, a plastic piece, has broken, and the rod is indeed flopping around in there. These are always fun, as they never break after the door is already open; it is always the act of opening the door which breaks them. The parts are cheap, less than $5, but getting to them...not so great.
To further assist you, I need to know which rear-door configuration your van has. Please respond if you still have the vehicle and the problem.
The speedometer cable should not have anything to do with changing the ball joint. it goes directly to the transmission on a 93. your grinding sounds like either someone didn't get the bearing back in the hub right or loose bolts on the wheel ..
If the van is an all power, Have your alternator checked. DO NOT remove battery cable while running to check alternator. You definitely will need a new one then. they are sensitive to voltage changes, if voltage drops much will lock auto trans in 1st gear & various others things will stop working that draw much juice. Anything under 11.7 volts will trigger trans lock into gear on these vans. Autozone & O'Reillys checks them for free if you bring it to them.
