First, let me caution you to not disconnect the battery while the engine is running. This can lead to Electronic Control Unit damage (that's the engine computer, etc etc etc.)
Secondly, it sounds like you have an alternator issue. You will need to have the alternator LOAD tested to make sure that it is charging properly at all times.
You may want to have the battery checked for the correct application also if you think it may be too small (although physical size is not always indicative of the amperage output capacity of a battery).
