Are you talking about the valve cover on the top of the engine? It shouldn't be to expensive.

Sienna 2001 oil leak Problem. 230,000 miles oil is leaking from underneath the engine a lot.

a leak under the motor can be from many places, first check the top parts,, most the time its a valve cover leaking, sometimes it just needs to be tightened from many miles of vibration, they loosen up, if that checks out ok, try underneath ,, the oil pan gasket and the oil filter seal ,

I have an leak comming down by the oil pan above the oil drain is on my 2000 toyota sloara I had the valvue cover gaskets replaced and im wondering if they didn't do the job right or could it be something...

Oil leak may be the oil pan gasket. you can purchase a dye at Autozone specifically made for determining where leaks are comming from . Or take the vehicle to an ASE certified repair shop. There Technicians will tell you where the leak is from.
With regards to the shift solenoid take it to an ASE Transmission repair shop have them do the repair. This is not a biggie but could turn out to be if you let it go.

Leaking oil was told it had an upper and lower oil pan is this correct? Was told in order to repair upper pan , engine needed to come out, this sounds extreme. what can be done to fix the problem?

to examine this firstly buy some degreaser, clean the engine so the location of the leak can be pin pointed, take it to anothe mechanic for a second opinion {always the wiser move}, always into saving money. Good luck

Oil and filter changing for 08 sienna. How complicated is it?

You still have to drain the engine oil from the drain plug in the oil pan, and I recommend replacing the drain plug gasket.
If you buy a filter from Toyota, it actually comes with instructions on exactly what to do. There is a 3/8" recess in the bottom of the filter housing, when you put a 3/8" extension and a ratchet in this and remove it, there should be a plastic piece that comes with the filter to pop into the bottom of the housing and drain the oil. replace the o-ring and reinstall the housing drain plug.

You can get a filter-cup tool from Pep Boys or local auto parts tools sections that will fit the filter housing. Use the cup with a ratchet and extension to remove the filter housing. replace the filter cartridge and the o-ring. Make sure to lubricate o-ring, they will snag! Reinstall and add 6.4 qts of oil
