check the rear differential as well as the transfer case...you may have broken something in both of them...i have seen it happen...since 4low uses a different gear it is possible for it to move in low and not 4 high

Why is dodge not covering the problem that many people are having with the transfer case falling off while driving it. This happend to us while driving 70 mph it a 2500 ram 2004.

Are you sure the transfer case had gear oil in it. Its like your differential it needs gear oil. If you let it run dry it will blow apart not to mention what it will do to your transmission.

Where can i purchase a rebuilt transfer case for a 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara >> Base 2.7L, RHD, V6. in Florida?

the chain is situated at the rear of the box and connects the output shaft of the gear box to the input shaft of the transfer case . it does wear and get loose and the gear teeth wear as well. all that is required is a chain and 2 gears and labour to replace
i feel that replacing the transfer case will not achieve much so i suggest that you talk with a service dealer to get a better idea of what is involved.

Transfer case will not shift out of 4wd into 2wd

old post but , others can learn PT 4WD.

that is a transfer case issue.

can be caused, by using 4wd on dry pavement and the damage caused.

that is, the correct action, jack up the front end of car.

then shift to 2wd and leave it there, until l offoard or on ice.

here are the rules for PART TIME 4WD.

http://www.rubicon-trail.com/4WD101/driveline-bind.html

and the results of using it wrong.

the damage can be anything, like:

damaged chain, or damaged main gear cogs. bent forks,

etc. damage has NO limits, when you wind it up.

no limits at all. just the guy driving and the forces.

this , all of it , is explained in the operators guide. (usually lost)

I have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 when i put it in 4 wheel it makes a loud banging noise whitch is coming from the transfer case it almost sounds like the chain is jumping offf the gears but not sure has anyone...

The '97 Ram 1500 5.9L 4x4 Transfer case was a Dana mfg unit (interchange # 412-00361 I think). The chain and gears would need to be replaced to correct this. Usually the labor and price of the parts cost more than replaceing the entire assembly depending on how much damage in the case has occurred. You can same a little if you can do the work yourself but the end price comes down to time, ability and cost.

I have a 98 dodge ram 1500 when i try to lock it in 4x4 it won't go, when i'm driving u can hear a loud clanking coming from the transfercase what does that mean

Bed news there is a chain in some of the Dodge transfer cases.
Chances are that it has stretched or broken.
Check some of the transfer case oil for metallic bits.
use a magnet near the drain plug to try and fish some out.
If you see metal pieces the chain is damaged.the chain is like a timing chain.

there is a seal which has failed on the input shaft of the transfer case. Replacement is possible by removing the transfer case for access.

My front transfer case on my 1997 Ram 1500 is

If you've been 4X4 driving a lot it could be that your gears are binding up . Meaning . . if you've ever had your vehicle locked in 4 and decided to hit pavement without unlocking, ( even if it was only a short distance, ie: a block or to), your gears have a bind on them which in time will really cause major problems. Starting with being hard to get into and out of 4WD and grinding noises. there are a few other things it could be instead but starting with this no cost attempt to finding out, I suggest you try it. You might be suprised. Put the truck in neutral . Jack up the front and rear of the truck and secure withjack stands. the wheels should give up what bind there is at that point.
