1998 GS manual Previa with 140k on clock. Has recently started slipping in 4th gear - if changing up from 3rd or down from 5th its asthough something isn't engaging and no further power from the car can...

Sounds like your transmission has come to the end of its life. You can try getting the transmission flushed , and an additive I.E. No Slip added. That might cure some of the problems but obviously if its slipping the clutchs inside are worn out and transmission needs an overhaul.

When driving the transmission seems to get stuck

Check the trani fluid while running in park..
Trani fluid is messured in pints - not quarts.
Be careful not to over fill..
If the fluid is good - & still slipping - you need reani service..

Hope this helps !!

Transmission Slipping?

Putting it in four wheel drive does not eliminate the transmission. Honestly, it sounds like the transmission is on it's way out. A 4l60e in one of cars was acting the same way. It required a rebuild.
