You can but it would be easier on you to pull the driveshaft, undo the tranny mount bolts and slide the tranny back

I had to do this on my 1988 F250, if I remember correctly:
Remove in this order:
Driveshaft, Starter, lower cover plate, transmission, torque converter.
Flywheel s/b bolted to converter.
When driveshaft is removed - plug gap in tranny output - between drive shaft and housing - to prevent fluid spillage.
When removing transmission - plug hole in converter to prevent spillage.
When handling converter hold it flywheel side down until - to avoid fluid loss.
I presume you have all the correct tools and a helper.

My expedition hessitate or feels like the tranny is not engaging between 40-60 mph. This only happen when the vehicle is warm and when you are trying to speed up. I'm thinking its the tranny going bad but...


Sound like the converter is not locking up when it is supposed to. The converter is locked by the computer under full throttle and allowed to spin somewhat freely when not under a load. if you have the electronically controlled overdrive the unit should come out of overdrive to let the car accelerate. Most problems now days are in the computer controls of the transmission.

2000 ford expedition will not change gears after reaching 40mph then car goes into neutral. Then if i put the car into overdrive it runs fine.


The infamous Exploder transmission. Try a tranny flush and new gasket. More likely it needs a new transmission.

drop the transmission, and starter,, its between the tranny and the back of the motor, I don't have the make and model or I could help you find a breakdown of the process,

How do i remove the transmission from a 2001 ford taurus


this is a big job,you will need to dissconnect the battery, then you will need an engine support bar to hold and lower the engine from the top. you will have to remove the battery and the bracket and also airbox, next is to raise the car and remove the wheels and then seperate the lower balljionts on both sides, remove the axle nuts and remove the axles. then remove the swaybar ends, next is to put engine support on the top of the engine and then remove the frame from under the engine and trany, before the frame can come out you will need to remove the exhaust system and also unbolt the steering rack from the steering shaft, make sure to lock wheel so it doesnt turn,remove lines from rack, when you remove the lower frame the steering rack and all the frnot end componets like the swaybar and lower control arms will come out with the frame you will need to unbolt the front and rear engine mounts, leave the trany mount bolted for now,after the frame is out you will then remove the bolt on the trany mount, this is the mount where the battery sits at the rear of the tranny, lower the engine slowly and just a bit. next is to remove the starter and flywheel covers, you will then remove the converter bolts that hold the flywheel to converter on tranny, next is to remove the tranny bbolts, make sure to leave one bolt on for now.next is to lower engine support enough so that the tranny has enough room to come out, next install tranny jack under tranny and remove last bolt holding it,then pry away from engine always checking to make sure all bolts are out and also all wire connections unhooked, like wiring harness to tranny and selector switch connector and speedometer connection, and tranny will seperate and then you slowly lower to ground, to install reverse directions. good day.

you will have to remove it, by the time you have it far enough back you have removed everything you need to remove a transmission.

How do you change a flywheel on a 1998 Ford Expedition, 5.4 L Eddie Bauer edition??


You will need to remove the transmission and (transfer case )if equipped to gain access to the flywheel. Once the tranny is out of the way you will be looking at the flywheel. If it is an automatic you will need to remove the torque converter bolts from the flywheel before tranny removal. Also if it is an automatic be sure to get the torque converter to engage the front pump in the tranny when you reinstall.

How do you change the clutch assembly for a 1998 plymouth breeze


Pull the cv axles, starter disconnect all likages to the tranny, remove all bellhousing bolts, Then support the tranny, remove all tranny mounts, lower and separate. Be ready to take BATH as the Thick Gooey tranny fluid WILL come out where the axles go. You could drain the tranny first step. Supprt the engine from above so not to tear up motor mounts. Then you can start to do the Clutch. If you have never done this before. Count on a weekend. And don't take 2 weeks to do it. Have the Flywheel resurfaced before putting back together. Do it once and do it right. Replace the rear main seal and Transmission seals while you have it apart. Trust me on this.

Whats involved in changing clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing on a 1996 ford mustang


The vehicle must be raised on four jackstands. Disconnect the battery pos(+) terminal.The driveshaft has to be removed . Then remove the three starter mounting bolts, this will allow acess to the main feed wire to the starter, remove the 1/2 inch nut and lock washer and remove the wire.Place the starter to the side. Next you'll need to remove the rear tranny mounting bolt. Then remove the crossmember from the frame. This is where you'll wish you hadn't started this job. You must support the tranny while sliding the crossmember out. This can easily be accomplished by placing a small floorjack centered under the tranny pan with a 1 foot by 1 foot square piece of plywood on the jack lift cradle.Next you'll want to remove and put aside any sensors (back-up, speed, gear position...) if utililized from the tranny. Remove all bell housing bolts. remove the slave unit from the bell housing. Very carefully roll the tranny back a small amount and lower the jack a small amount. Continue this until the tranny is free of the pilot bearing.Lower and remove the tranny. Remove the pressure plate in a rotation motion as not to put too much strain on any one single bolt. Remove the pressure plate being careful not to be hit by the clutch disk which will now be free. Check the condition of the flywheel for cracks and glazing. This will determine if it needs to be turned or replaced. Check the pilot bushing with your finger to make sure it turns smoothly and freely.Then......put it back together with your new parts. 1999 ford expedition - rear main seal leaking


I don't know why your mechanic needs a picture of the seal. Here is what you will need to do. The tranny will need to be removed because your vehicle has a one piece real seal. After you remove the tranny remove the flywheel then you have access to the rear main seal. If you have never removed a tranny leave it to someone capable of the job. You will need many tools to remove the tranny and a little muscle here and there. It is an easy process for a mechanic, but labor intensive.
