You can attach a siphon to the fuel line from the pump back to the tank and use it to detect any leaks in the line. You can also check the carb the same way, running it on fuel from siphon. If both check out OK, you can use an electric pump or replace the mechanical pump. Either should work providing that the "sock" inside the tank is not obstructed.

Ring and pinion gears and a master bearing set. The bearing set should come with all bearings, crush sleeves, etc..

simple answer is yes.
the rear part of the transmission tunnel curves underneath the back part of the gearbox so you cannot just lower it down as you can with most rwd cars.
the gearbox must be brought forward a fair way to clear this.
you easiest option is to remove the engine and gearbox together, split them out of the car, and bolt them back together to refit both into the car at the same time.
