SOURCE: not charging

Possibly a fusible link somewhere in the circuit has burned through and disconnected the circuit.A wiring diagram would be needed to look for the location of any fusible links Ohms check the wires involved in the alternator charging circuit to verify continuity.

Check all grounds running from all electrical, If there is not a good contact this problem will occur, when you locate the ground surface take sandpaper or even a knife and scrape or sand the connector and the ground surface then reconnect it, It should return to normal if not then it could be a solenoid possibly but not sure

SOURCE: headlights wont work properly

Sounds like you have a problem in your headlight switch. As far as them staying on sometimes when you shut the car off are you referring to daytime running lamps or the regular headlights? If it's daytime running lamps that like to stay on and your headlights do not like to turn on then there could be a combination of headlight switch and daytime running lamp relay.

It is possible the relay gets the signal from the headlight switch as well, since they generally turn off when you turn your headlights on.

Your battery is not charged and gets drained constantly, dome lights doesn't take much voltage to be lit. Get a voltmeter and check on the battery. Engine off it should be all charged up and 12V ish. Try to start your engine, should be 13-14v charging, if not, then it is your alternator not charging or SOMEHOW your battery doesn't receive enough charging from the alternator.
When you turn on the headlight while engine is running and died off because the alternator some how couldn't supply enough current to power both headlights and motor ignition system
Get your alternator tested, before that all connections between alternator and battery is NOT LOOSE, or broken or damaged. Then go to auto electrician. Then sort out your fuses later.

ALTERNATOR NOT CHARGING

was the alternator bench tested? or tested on the car? if the alternator tests good off the car and the wiring has been tested, the ground may be loose or disconnected.

Car wont stay running

Being tested without a load on it can make a difference. If the battery is not putting out 12 volts it will make things crazy. Also the alternator could be charging at times and sometimes not. Alt. Should have 12.9 at least. Check serpentine belt, could be slipping therfore it cant charge.

Could one WHAT be overcharging the other WHAT???

To understand the problem you must first understand that the car runs off of the BATTERY. The job of the alternator is to replace the power that the car uses back to the battery. The car DOES NOT operate off of the alternator (many people do not get this). The charge light comes on when the charging voltage from the alternator is lower than the voltage that is available at the battery posts (that is why the charge light is ALWAYS on when the ignition switch is on but the engine is not running.

If the CHARGING SYSTEM had been PROPERLY tested, you would have seen this in the tests. If you removed your alternator to have it tested, this does not test the charging system in the car.

This can be caused by a failure or high resistance in ANY PART of the charging system. This includes not only the battery and the alternator, but also all of the connecting cables, wires and the ignition switch.

If the battery and alternator are both good, then the problem is most likely a loose or badly corroded battery cable. However, high resistance in the ignition switch circuit to the alternator can also cause this type of problem. The charging system in your car needs to be PROPERLY tested to pinpoint the location of the fault.

My 99 plymouth neon will not keep a charge. The battery is a month old and was re-tested and it is fine. I also had the alternator tested and it was fine. Any suggestions?

Even though the alternator was tested , it was probably tested for a charge. I dont know if you removed it and had it bench tested or had it checked in car. You may have a draw in your electrical system somewhere. It could bae a bad diode in the alternator or it could be a glove box light staying on or a trunk light staying on.Or or or ? All of these things require testing each circuit. What you can do to see if you have a draw on the battery when you shut it off is to remove the negative battery cable and place a 12v test light from the negative battery cable to the negative battery post. If the light comes on you have a power draw in your system somewhere. If you dont have a test light you can pick one up at your local parts house. You dont need anything fancy just a cheap one will work fine. The things above are the most common. Depending on how many miles or should I say starts you have on your car you might take a look at your ignition switch and make sure it is turning off all the way before you pull the key out. Sometimes the key gets worn and does not need to go all the way to the off position before it can be pulled out.

There isn't much to the charging system on any vehicle. The belt spins the alt copper binding and creates eletrical current. That current goes directly back to the battery. The other wire goes to the gauge in the dash. I would replace the alt. If you said it was intermittent and it tested good at the rebuild shop who is to say that wasn't one of it good times? Easy way to find out how good it is. While the car is running unhook the possitve terminal from the battery. If its good the car will stay running. If it isn't the car wont.

The battery/ brake light was caused by the alternator. so make sure the battery is good and good connections. turn the headlights on and be sure they are bright.
