If your old alternator went bad it is possible it burned up the fusible link wire. Google search fusable link location for your year and model truck.

Did you check power an grounds at the alternator ? The heavy gage wire on the back of the alternator should have B+ voltage , if not fusible link is blown . The connector ,pin's 1 & 3 should have B+ voltage also . There are videos on youtube on checking charging systems . Do you know how to do automotive electrical testing ? How to use a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter ?

Car will not hold charge

I will try and answer this. Most responses you will receive will have you looking for a drain in the system. Very well could be that.

But you said when Jumper cables are removed it does not charge. I have not heard of this in your Year of car, but witnessed it myself in a 2004 F150. There is a circuit called a "battery saver". Its job is to disconnect a battery drain to preserve the battery. What can happen is the Alternator uses power to make and generate even more power.

When a battery is not fully charged it needs a higher rate of charge and the Alternator may be viewed as a parasitic drain. The battery saver activates and disconnects the charging circuit. It can cut off at even 70MPH. I have seen F150's charge for about 5 minutes after removing a jumper and then cuts the battery charging circuit.

You need to be sure the battery is 100% charged. You need the car checked for things like the Diodes and starter draw. If you take the Alternator or Starter for a bench check it will not show how the wiring is working in the car. It is best to check the whole car.

Ford f150 4.2 not charging put in new alt and batt

Fully charge your battery. Some years of Ford F150 had parts which would interrupt any battery drain to preserve the battery. This would include the charging circuit which was see as parasitic.

The Antitheft would also cause problems in the electric circuit.

The newer Alternators are not made to work as well as the old ones. If the new Alternators have to work too hard they will fail from overheating so a bad battery could cause the Alternator to never catch up.

Also go to Autozone.com for a free wiring and fusebox diagram when you register your truck online. Check if there is a inline fuse within the first 30" from the Alternator. Or check for a charging Relauy in the Powerbox diagram.

Not fire from alternator to battery alternator checked out good battery new is there a fuse i mite have missed some where on 1991 f150 5.8l

this is not a fuse problem, replace the large connector to the alternator, the Ford dealer can supply this, there are numerous Ford bulletins about this connector overheating and giving a no charge condition

I had to replace my alternator and voltage regulator, (external) and I'm not getting any charge to the battery. I'm wondering if I simply need an external ground or do I need to replace the wiring bundle...

where did you buy the new alternator? Are you sure the alternator is good? Have the alternator tested before you spend time/money on your other components. If your wires are damaged or corroded, that's another problem.
