Question about Datsun Cars & Trucks

Open Question

HI. I changed from su carb to golf carb on datsun stanza 1800gl,automatic. Where does all the vacuum pipes on the carb go and where do i plug in the vacuum pipe from the automatic gearbox?

I connected the vacuum pipe to the intake manifold directly but the car smokes a lot due to the gearbox oil going in the intake. I changed that pipe and smoke stops but it dont change to drive now. I only have one and two, drive don't work now.

SOURCE: Oil leak

Hello Pierre,
A little more detail may help me on this one, however this sounds like possibly your power steering pipe? both these use auto trans fluid it is reddy brown in colour and viscosity (Thickness) watery.
If this is the pipe, check the fluid reservoir it should have either a Yellow top with power steering or a steering wheel diagram on it.
If full then please give me more information as to location on engine where pipe comes from and goes too as nowadays engine oil is usually internally dispersed. Only oil cooler pipes possibly? will go to a finned type radiator usually near the front grille of the vehicle.
I hope this points you in the right direction as I'm thinking of giving this help up as very hard to remain on top slot when loads of questions responded to and no replies.
Good Luck,

SOURCE: White Smoke From Tail Pipe/Exhaust

It often means that you are burning antifreeze. You asked if it needs antifreeze, have you noticed any leaking out of the reservoir tank while you are running it? Sometimes when the head gasket goes it will produce a passage for the antifreeze to pass from the capillaries into the combustion chamber. It is easy to check if you have an air compressor. Remove one of the rear sparkplugs and the radiator cap. Fill the radiator and then push some air into the sparkplug hole (get a good seal in case a valve is open). Repeat with all the cylinders and watch for air bubbles coming up into the radiator. If bubbles come up or fluid is pumped out, the head gasket is blown and must be replaced. It is more likely to happen at the back of the engine because it is farthest away from the fan and therefore gets less cooling. Also check your oil for discoloration. If it is a brownish color it could mean your oil and antifreeze are mixing and has the potential to damage your bearings

Hello i have a nissan stanza'84 hatchback, it runs normal in flat road but when the road starts to climb it choked and stop, what must be the problem i have sent it to several shop but still no good...

Hi,
You got a classic one..........
Return the car from the one that overhauled/tuned it. the problem is the timing adjustment.

Check the ff.
  • Ignition timing advance( set the timing to +5 degrees to +7 degrees dwell angle ) to a favorable setting.
  • Check the vacuum hoses, replace the hoses w/ leakage, the main one is behind/under the carb that usually breaks first.
  • Check the vacuum advancer on the distributor( test if it moves when you put a vacuum on it ).
  • Test the compression in each cylinder.

Hope that helps you out!

1990 Nissan Stanza 2.4 Liter Engine miss. This is a used car we just bought, has 112,000 miles on it and it only happens when I put the transmission in drive or reverse. It does not happen when in park....

could just need a tune up,you could also pull of the distributor cap and look for oil intrusion, if there is you will need to replace the distributor

Datsun stanza idle speed

Water vapor in your distributor cap will cause those conditions, especially after engine washing. Remove and dry the distributor cap and it should run fine aftrewards.

Low idle speed

if you washed the engine bay theres a chance you may have got water into the spark plugs or on the distrubutor, remove dizzy cap and remove water from the underside, sum crc products work well at this. usually after the engine gets hot it will evaporate the water away, I hope you don't have an exposed air filter, this could also be wet causing starvation. sum more info would be helpful

Check ignition coil, they are known to short circuit after a wash.
Try starting engine at night or in the dark and look around coil and leads for hi voltage sparks.

Datsun stanza 1980 tappets (lifters)

This car has hydraulic lifters( tappets} therefore should not adjustment, you probably have a bad or weak lifter. But, in any case you have to remove the valve covers to make the adjustment. You will see the adjustable bolt on the rocker arm. rotate the engine until the valve is all the way to the top, [no tension on the valve spring] then place a feeler Gage in between the rocker arm and the valve stem, adjust the rocker arm until the feeler Gage is snug but not tight. Do this with each valve. Check the book for the correct Gage to use but I think it is a .018.
