Where does the pulley go near the timing belt in a 97 ford contour

One of the pulleys broke trying to replace it where does it go so I can get my car started

The A/C pully is supposed to spin freely until the AC is activated to run.. The cranshaft pully does not. Replace the tensioner pully. The belt has to fit in between the grooves on the pullys.

SOURCE: do not know how to remove crankshaft pulley to replace timeing belt

Ignore smart a$$ comments.
Disconnect negative battery terminal.
Remove front right wheel.
Remove splash guard.
Place jack under engine.
Remove left engine support bolts from body.
Remove engine support plate bolts from engine.
Unbolt air conditioner pump and move it out of the way.
Get under vehicle and remove steering pump bolts and move it out of the way.
Remove 6 crankshaft pulley bolts, should be 12mm.
The engine support bracket shoud come off now.
Remove the main crankshaft bolt.
Remove crankshaft dampener.
Remove the timing cover bolts and take off the covers.
Take off the old belt & replace with a new one, don't use a previously used belt.
Make sure the belt tensioner is installed correctly.
Put all the stuff back on.
Get a Haynes manual, pages 3-41.

How to change a timing chain tensioner on 2002 ford explorer


Pull your Serpentine belt, remove the Cam Belt Cover, (it may be advantageous to remove front wheel in the Cam Belt side) Remove the timing belt and time the engine to specifications, make sure you are on #1TDC, remove the tensioner and replace. if there is and Idler pulley replace that as well. You can use Spray Carb Cleaner to clean the pulleys before replacing the belt. Note, you may have to also remove the Harmonic Balancer and pulleys from the crankshaft.

Is there a way to install a bypass belt for a burned out air compressor on a Ford Contour 2000, if so where and is there a manual or video instructions on how to do it yourself?


Don't know about the bypass belt, but what many do is buy and install an "A/C delete pulley"-a freewheeling pulley that is put on where the compressor mounts. Then you can use the same belt.

You would just have to check if such a pulley is made for Contours. Try parts stores, try rockauto.com, autozone.com, even ask a parts person at ford dealer if he has heard of such a pulley for your car. All you need do is remove the compressor and install the delete pulley on the compressor mounting bracket.
Another choice is if contours came with no A/C, you might try a belt for a contour without a/c- sometimes this works, sometimes not, depending if other pulley driven units are mounted in the same place as yours with a/c.

1999 Ford Contour. 2.0L engine. I'm trying to bypass a/c compressor because it is eating up clutches. I'm buying serpentine belts for engines w/o ac but they do not fit(too long). I've checked...


At Auto Zone, ask for part number 34223. It is a bypass pulley that you can replace the a/c compressor with so you can use the original belt without issue.

What if my timing belt broke how do i get it back in to time 1999 ford contur


There are marks on the pulleys and engine to line everything up. I would check to see if the car has an interference engine, if the timing belt breaks, some of the valves will be left open and the pistons will come up and hit and bend the valves.

How do you replace the serpintine belt on a 1998 contour?


Open the hood and locate the belt tensioner. The serpentine belt drive is located on the front of the engine on the passenger side of the engine compartment. The spring-loaded belt tensioner on the 1998 Contour is located slightly to the left of and below the water pump pulley
Release the tension on the belt using the serpentine belt removal tool. On vehicles equipped with the 2.5 liter V-6 engine, snap the 3/8 inch-drive adapter onto the removal tool. Slip the tool into the square, 3/8-inch hole in the end of the tensioner arm. Rotate the tensioner clockwise to release the tension. While holding the tensioner back, remove the belt from one of the pulleys. Release the tensioner, remove the belt from the remaining pulleys and pull it out of the engine compartment
Snap a13 mm socket adapter into the belt removal tool for the 2.0 liter, four cylinder Contour. Place the tool onto the 13 mm bolt that holds the tensioner pulley to the tensioner arm and rotate the tensioner clockwise. While hold the tensioner back, slip the belt off one of the pulleys. Release the tensioner, slip the belt from the remaining pulleys then remove it from the engine compartment
Route the new belt around the pulleys, according to the belt routing guide. The belt routing guide on the 1998 Contour is located on a decal on the left (passenger side) strut tower. If this decal is missing, or unreadable, the belt routing guide can also be found in your service manual. Rotate the tensioner pulley one more turn to allow the new belt to slip under the tensioner pulley.
Check the belt for proper alignment on the pulleys. It should lay flat on the pulley and not overhang the edges. If the belt must be repositioned, release the tensioner and reposition as needed.

Replace a serpentine belt on a 97 ford taurus


use a 15mm box wrench on the nut retaining the tensioner pulley to pry the tensioner 'arm' against the spring to release belt. note belt routing on decal under hood,or make a sketch,to aid in replacement.
on OHV engine rotate clockwise
on OHC rotate counter clockwise
be sure belt is completely seated on pulleys

How much does it cost to replace plugs on a 1996 ford contour?? The plugs have popped up and are making a gun shot noise every so often.


You may want to get your timing belt and pulleys checked, the belt might have slipped a tooth,and causing damage to the inside of the engine every time you drive it.
The plugs ( if platinum ) are around $ 10.00 each.

I cant get the belt on all the way. (Serpentine) on a 97 contour


A 2.0 uses a 13 mm wrench to back the tensioner away from the tension on the idler pulley, a 2.5 uses a 3/8 drive rachet to swing back the idler pulley so you can install the belt. Don't know which engine it is, but find the idler pulley and move it back as in the instructions above. You attach the wrench or rachet and the pulley will move with some force so that you can slip the belt on. hope this helps you, Rick

1998 Ford Contour Serpintine belt replacement


Simple, look into the belt tension pulley there you will see a square notch. Invest in a breaker bar,since this is a consumable item you may want to replace the belt every so often. The space is limited but in can be done. Stick the socket end on the square notch a push down. You will notice the whole belt loosen.At the same time pull the belt away from any other pully to release entire belt. Reverse process to install,which is what you need since yours already took a ****.
p.s You can pick up a breaker bar relatively cheap ($10-15). I broke a belt tensioner by not using the right tool.
