Have a 2000 Ford F-150....top radiator hose just popped off....notice fan does not turn easily....any suggestion where to look....have 5.4L

the open pipe that you took the hose off of is the thermostat housing, you will need to remove this to reveal the thermostat, make sure you use a new gasket with sealant when reinstalling thermostat housing to prevent leaks and dont over tighten the bolts,run both bolts down as far as you can before final tightning

This could be two unassociated problems; the flickering oil light can indicate that the pressure sensor for the idiot light is failing- this is not uncommon, the other can be a failed temperature sensor sensor on the main radiator. 
The low oil pressure condition may also be indicative of a worn engine part or parts. It would make sense to have the actual oil pressure checked in a shop to see if it is in the normal range which should lay between ~30 & 60 pounds depending on engine RPMs and engine temperature. The idiot lights trigger at around 4-5 pounds and this is really pretty late for a warning; if the pressure is actually that low, not only lubrication is too little but the cooling effect of the circulating oil is inadequate.
If it was my car, I would replace both sensors before getting too worried. The cost of these together (parts only) should be well under $50 US.

Run the engine and look at the header tank , is there lots of air bubbles coming back out of the water if is then the head gasket may have split and that is down to either a can of Radweld or a strip down repair

If the radiator is not uniformly hot them I would go for that as your problem

Normal operation is that the engine starts the thermostat is closed , engine block heats up and opens water starts to circulate around the block

So to check that you need to fill the radiator with cold water run it for a few minutes check the bottom hose it should be cold

The stat opens and the bottom hose should get hot as the water from the block is pumped into the radiator for cooling.

The radiator should get hot all over and the cooling fan should kick in when the sensor hits the over limit stop.

If that does not happen then get someone to remove the stat altogether (It is only there to get the engine block warm quickly in cold regions )

In which case the bottom hose should go from cold to warm to hot

sounds like the thermostat gasket is leaking. Might as well change the thermostat and gasket at the same time. make sure the hose clamp is tight sometimes it needs to get tightened up. could be lealking from the hose and running down.

How do you remove a radiator


remove radiator no problem, just drain radiator using clean large drain pan.you can buy drain pan at any auto parts stores.just drain radiator remove top radiator support and cooling fan.then remove top and bottom radiator hoses and remove the transmission cooler lines.when replace radiator good time replace all coolant hoses and replace thermostat and radiator pressure cap if good time replace radiator with new coolant.

03 montero boiled over on the highway-radiator is cold,engine comes to temp,tophose 150,bottom 95--help


Check the thermostat...drop it into a pan of boiling water and check that it pops open. Take the pan off the heat and check that the 'stat pops closed (about 80 centigrade). Next check out radiator...remove top and bottom hoses and back flush with a garden hose through the bottom hose connection to remove any obstruction, rusty gunk build up. Flush out hoses to engine (bottom one especially) if full of crud. Flush system out until water runs clean. Drain complete system and refill with 50% water : 50%antifreeze mix. Check for compatible antifreeze for your engine not all anti freezes are the same. Antifreeze contains anti corrosion inhibitors which will prevent further crud build up. As the engine warms up ensure that all air is expelled by squeezing hoses etc. Ensure top hose becomes hot and if you have an electric fan that it come s on fully. If it fails to engage then chack out temperature sensor (not the same as 'sender' to the dash display), check out fan relays and fuses. Hot wire the fan with trailing wires from the battery to ensure that the motor is OK as a final check.

A ford 2000 f-150 and the motor will not get hot. replaced radiator, thermostat, hoses, heater core, reservoir cap, fan clutch. Any ideas?


Ya the coolant temp sensor is probably bad. This would show no or little reading on your temp gauge.

It overheats the coolant tank is empty after driving about 150 miles


Hi. There could be a hole somewhere in the radiator or one of the hoses. Is the radiator running out of water also? check all possible corners for water marks. Turn on the engine and pop up your hood and observe all hoses and your radiator. You may also check the water pump. If water pump is not working this is a possible culprit also.

Near the thermostat (Top radiator hose attachment to engine) easily noticed due to the red wire with a white stripe.

Radiator replacement


  1. Remove air cleaner and duct assembly.
  2. Drain the coolant.
    1. Remove the engine mount struts.
    2. Remove the cooling fans with the cooling fan shroud.
    3. Remove the radiator upper hose from the radiator.
    4. Remove the radiator lower hose from the radiator.
    5. Disconnect the transaxle oil cooler lines from the radiator.
    6. Remove the radiator brackets and bolts.
    7. Remove the radiator. Installation Procedure
    1. Install the radiator. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
      1. Install the radiator brackets and bolts.
        • Tighten the bolts to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) .
      1. Connect the transaxle oil cooler lines to the radiator.
      2. Install the radiator upper hose to the radiator.
      3. Install the radiator lower hose to the radiator.
      4. Install the cooling fans with the cooling fan shroud.
      5. Install the engine mount struts. Notice: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL (R) or HAVOLINE (R) DEX-COOL (R) coolant. If Coolant other than DEX-COOL (R) or HAVOLINE (R) DEX-COOL (R) is added to the system the engine coolant will require change sooner; at 50,000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.
      6. Fill the cooling system.
      7. Install the air cleaner and duct assembly.

the thermostat can be easily changed from up top, the T-stat is located at the engine end of the upper radiator hose under the flange the hose connects to. Make sure u follow manufacturer's cooling system bleeding procedures when you refill after the T-stat is changed out.
