Your engine needs fuel, spark, air to run. Check for fuel at the engine.spark at the plugs. Air to the engine.

Check for spark at a couple of plugs and if you have spark spray some carb cleaner in the throttle body to see if she will run .

i check for spark i do have spark but it is red i replace the spark plugs and spark plugs wires and i pour a little gas into throttle body and the engine started up but the fire is still red the engine run like it is getting to much gas black smoke is coming from the tail pipe the engine is running rich when i pull the spark plug wires off the plugs the engine does not change and the RPM does not drop why what i need to check now?

I think your engine has eight spark plugs, two for each cylinder. If you only disconnect one, the RPM may not drop, especially if the engine is running very rich (black smoke). Make sure that the correct wires are going to the correct plugs from the distributor, and check to see if the spark from the coil is a nice fat spark.
The next thing you should check is the carburetor itself - check that the float setting is correct and that the choke plate is moving freely.

  • Joe Russell Apr 22, 2017

i disconnect all the wires on the left side of the engine at the same time but still no change in the engine and i went to the right side the engine change only at one wire disconnect can you send me a firing order on this engine? the spark from the coil is also a red spark do it suppose to be red or blue? i think this vehicle have a throttle body i don't see a choke plate.

Which transmission and engine size do you have so I can look up schematics for it .

  • Robert Wood
    Robert Wood Apr 23, 2017

Possible resistance in the power feed wire or poor ground to the ignition coil . The spark should be blue .

  • Joe Russell Apr 23, 2017

it is a manual transmission 4 wheel drive I'm not so sure about the engine size I'm gussing that it is a 2.4L but it have 8 spark plugs it is a small engine i remove the distributor cap and crank the engine the engine started for a few second with the cap off do that suppose to happen? i never seen that happen before i notice there is a backfire through the throttle body when cranking what cause backfire? it just start doing that. hope you can help.

What symptoms did it have before doing this ? Did it idle bad or have poor power etc. ?

  • Joe Russell Apr 23, 2017

the engine did idle bad poor power black smoke coming from tail pipe hesitation or stumble during acceleration at one time the engine stop starting so i remove the fuel pump relay and fuse and put a little gas into the throttle body and crank the engine and it start up but now it want start, when i am cranking the engine it crank normal at the begining then the sound of the engine change like there is no compression spinning real fast and it backfire through thethrottle body it just now started the back firing i did replace new plugs and wires can you send me a firing order on this engine so i can check for cross up wires from the cap to plugs and coil?

I Think this is your engine . Have you replaced the engine temp sensor as it may be stuck reading cold making engine over rich causing the black exhaust . The weak spark may cause the rich exhaust too .

  • Joe Russell Apr 23, 2017

this do look like my engine no i Havn't replaced the engine temp sensor will there be a error code if the sensor is fault? how do i fix the weak spark?

With the distributor cap off does the inside of the distributor itself , not the cap , look rusty ?

  • Joe Russell Apr 24, 2017

the engine that you sent me with the firing order it disapear before i got a change to print out a copy of it can you send it to me again? i don't know why it disapear.

this engine have 2 coils can the coil wire be connect wrong or can they be connect to either coil? it didn't show in the picture. how do i remove the rotor button do it screw off or pull off?

  • Robert Wood
    Robert Wood Apr 25, 2017

The intake coil should have a four wire connector and the exhaust coil a three wire . The button may have a set screw where it tightens into the shaft . It is possible to have a feed or ground that has resistance/corrosion and is causing a weak spark as well as the resistor circuit itself .

  • Joe Russell Apr 26, 2017

i don't understand about the intake coil and the exhaust coil i do see on the distributor cap where the ignition coil wire connect it show IN, and EX, and on the cap where the ignition plug wires connect it show E4,I1,E2,I3,E1,I4,E3,I2, I'm not sure that i have them connect in the right order how can i make sure?

My suggestion would be to investigate a failing air bypass valve or idle compensation switch(motor/servo) which induces a higher idle during warm-up. Without this availability the engine is being fed extra fuel and relying on a slower idle speed which results in stalling. Thank you, Dana

SOURCE: need diagram of 1989 nissan sentra of engine

the firing order of that vehicle is 1,3,4,2. The cylinders are in order from 1-4 starting at the front most part of the motor. and traveling back to the transmission. The order is at the distributor cap. it travels in a counter-clockwise direction and the wires go cylinder #1, #3, #4, #, in that order.

hope this helped

Can be several things. Sounds like a first step would be to get or perform a tune-up. Another thing that can be a problem is the timing belt may need to be replaced.

1989 nissan pickup 4 cylinder when i turn the key to crank the engine i hear a click sound at the starter what could the click sound be?

could be battery . It needs a huge amount of charge to turn over the starter motor. It may work the headlights but be unable to turn the starter motor.
Suggest get battery tested at a battery seller to see if battery is really ok .
The click is most likely the solenoid on the starter motor clicking on.
You might be able to get someone to run jumper leads
Note +ve to + ve and negative to negative !
from their car while the engine is running and their car is not moving !
Wait 10 minutes
Then try to crank over your car engine .

I jump started a 4wd vehicle a month ago from my car and it took about 10 minutes to get enough charge in it to crank over the engine !

They will work but you will need to also switch out the ecm, pcm, and possibly reflash both of those computers. It would work but it will cost you an arm an a leg just to make it operational, you will also have to fabricate a new crossmember for the transmission mount so the trans will be safely mounted. My recomendation would be to go back to original and save yourself many a dollars.any other questions get back to meHOPE I COULD HELP!!!

Did you sync up the engine properly when you reinstalled the timing belt/chain? It is possible to be on the marks and be 180 degrees off. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft then check the rotor position. If it doesn't point to number one wire terminal position roll the engine over until the crank lines up to the timing mark again. The distributer needs to be pointing the wire terminal that goes to number cylinder.Any other position is unacceptable and you can't simply turn the distributer to number one either You need to retime the crankshaft to the camshft making sure that the distrubitor points to number one and both valves for number one cylinder are completely closed.
