You should take the car to an autoparts store and have them use a scan tool to retrieve the fault code(s) that are stored in the car's computer. Most parts stores will do this at no charge. That will give you an idea of issues with the car. Excessive fuel consumption can be caused by a timing issue, a compression issue, or a fault or leak in the fuel system. Getting the fault codes would be a good place to start in identifying potential causes. Hope this helps and best wishes.

Plugs are a definite possiblitity. Since you just got the car, I would look at routine maintenance items first. New plugs, check condition of plug wires, check condition of battery and wires, new air filter element, new fuel filter, change oil and oil filter, new pcv valve, check cap and rotor, etc. These are things I do when I purchase a used vehicle. Most times you never know how well maintenance was kept up on a vehicle by the previous owner. I would start with the basics and go from there. If you have the equipment and facilities, I would perform a compression test on the cylinders and a fuel pressure test at the fuel rail.

These are things that I usually do. This is not really that expensive and I look at it as an investment that should pay dividends later on. Hope this helps and I wish you luck with your car.

Going down the highway at 55-60 mph I just barely tap the gas and the vehicle jumps, I press the gas hard and it stops, leave off the gas check engine light blinks and jumping continues.

A blinking light usually means exhaust system probably catalic converter. You most likely have a small blockage in it which means exhaust can't get out correctly. Have vehicle scanned at autozone or similar.

Check for vacuum leaks. Fuel filter clogged? Check spark plug wires and make sure spark plugs are gapped correctly. Get fuel injection cleaned.

ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, CAR BURNS ALOT OF GAS. SLIGHT

You don't have a simple problem. Engine light has to be read by a scanner (OBDII) available at autoparts store. Or take to mechanic. After you get code you'll have to be a mechanic to fix problems. Burns lots of gas can be many different causes. Miss in motor, same. Please take to professional if this is beyond your knowledge. Good luck!

Yesterday my 1998 pontiac sunfire ran out of gas, am i going to need to do anything besides add more gas to get it running again?

shouldn't have to....just put gas in it...and please don't run no additives in your engine/tank...your engine is not designed to burn the additives that are available on the after market...

Engine miss 98 sunfire with codeP031

Not sure where you got that code but it almost sounds like you burnt a valve. Start up the engine and remove the oil cap and see if there alot if internal blow by pressure. If there is lot's of air coming out of the filler hole your have ether 1 piston ring bad, 2 burn a hole in the valve or and bent valve stem. Good luck sorry i dont have any more information on how your car is running.

Check engine light stays on

Make sure the gas cap is there and is fully tightened (it will click), a loss or missing cap will turn the check eng light on.
