Question about Mazda 626

1 Answer

Alternator(s) Keep Burning up! Hi Everyone, I have replaced my alternator 4 times. Now the alternator has burned up again and I have to replace it a 5th! time.

I drive a 1997 Mazda 626. I have replaced the battery twice and a relay. Additionally, for some reason when I step on the brake, my front lights come on (not the head lights-the small ones under the headlights) and the dashboard lights up too. However, when I turn on the dashboard lights, they barely light. Can someone please help me diagnose the problem? Thanks so much.

For the lights on the front and dash lights coming on when you push the brakes, check the brake light bulbs and wiring at the back.A defective bulb may be energizing the parking light circuit by transferring voltage from the brake light circuit. If you have trailer wiring this could be the source also.Do you have a sub in the car? They can shorten the life of alternators as they can use lots of power.Have you checked the voltage the alternator is producing and amps the vehicle is asking for when running?

-Take the battery to the part store to test for you. It could drain too
much voltage. That's why it keep burning the alternator.
-And make sure alternator fuse is correct amp.

Going through alternators

Hi there, I am a girl (i.e. not car savvy), but I have a 1998 Altima as well, and the first time (4 months ago) I noticed the brake and battery lights on simultaneously, I took it to a Nissan service shop. Everything seemed fine until about a month ago when the symptoms returned. I ignored the problem for 3 days and the car just stopped running, period. Took it back to the shop, figured out it was a fauly alternator, got it sorted, no problem. Today (1 month after replacement), I see the same bloody problem, and I'm taking it back to the shop in the morning. I am wondering... is it the alternator, or something connected to the alternator that is malfunctioning? The 2 alternators put in were "rebuilt" since they didn't have genuine Nissan alternators available. I really hope the dealers aren't taking me for a merry ride.

Alternator keeps going out

Have your battery checked before you put any more alternators in the car. If your battery has a dead cell or just needs replaced it could be making your alternators cover too much slack and burning them up.

I have a 1982 Chevy k 10 and the ignition coil keeps buring out. I have replaced it several times and it starts fine after replacement but then burns up within 15 minutes of running time and then the car...

Check your charging voltage. It should not be any higher than 14v (even that is high if it does not drop) If it's high, check the regulator in the alternator and make sure you have a good ground to the engine and even if necessary to the alternator itself.
If the coil is still giving you problems after correcting any alternator problems you can add a chrysler type ballast resistor to the power line to the coil. That should lower the voltage enough to keep it from burning out.

Wire burning in half when ignition is turned and wont start

A seriously shorted alternator can do this too.
Try this:
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery - Replace the fried wire - Remove the lead that runs from either the positive battery terminal or from the starter terminal to the alternator; the idea is to get the alternator out of the circuit temporarily. - Reattach the positive battery terminal (if it had been removed) - Reattach the negative terminal - Try starting the engine
If the engine will now start and the wire you replaced doesn't fry again, the alternator is badly shorted and will have to be replaced.

Have a short gone through 3 alternators/ 93 protege

THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR IS INSIDE THE PCM AND NOT THE ALTERNATOR. IF YOU KEEP BURNING UP THE ALTERNATOR THEN THE REGULATOR IS OVER CHARGING. YOU WILL HAVE TO REPLACE THE PCM TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE PCM IS LOCATED UNDER THE CENTER CONSOLE IN FRONT OF THE SHIFTER.

I keep braking (burning off belt smokinging squealing than breaking)than go to my alternator

How long does the belt last, and is it wearing off on the edges? With the belt off I would check all the rest of your acessories for no side play and they should all turn very easily. Also what engine does your car have? Is it the 2.3L 4 cyl? Thank you for using fixya.com
