it is quite possible that the transmission fluid has deteriorated over time and with use.
this is perfectly normal with a high mileage vehicle and does not necessarily mean there are any problems with the gearbox itself.

with this sort of mileage, it is advisable to change the transmission fluid and any associated filters as a precaution.

if you are not confident to do the job yourself, ask for prices in a few different local garages.

if you would like detailed instructions on doing this job yourself, please feel free to ask here, or refer to your workshop manual.

My '03 escape will not engage in drive or reverse. When you put it into drive or reverse it just revs the engine.

run a transmission diagnostics with a respectable scanner, this transmissions are electronic, maybe one of the servos are defective.

Where's transmission filter located?

Filter is not in the pan- my wife has an '03 Tribute with the 3.0, and trust me, it's not under the pan. From everything I have read, it's inside the tranny someplace and not accessible without tearing the thing out and down.

And, yes there is a drain plug on the side/bottom of the tranny case- you can use a 3/8" ratchet w/o a socket on it to loosen/tighten.
