Our Victron Quattro inverter voltage readings fluctuate wildly (0 - 176) when there is no load on the system. As soon as there is a load, the voltage stays steady at 119. Is this a problem?

Temperature gauge keeps fluctuating whats the cause


Fiats have a reputation for electrical/electronic problems as they age and even when they are not very old they can manage strange things that even sometimes defeat the dealers, though the same can be said of many modern vehicles. I used to look after a Ducato motorhome and fortunately didn't need to get involved with much electrical work - the only faults were caused by the coachbuilders rushing around and being careless and not by Fiat.

I am not sure if the temp gauge is driven by the engine management or is a traditional circuit but either way the temperature gauge is in effect a voltmeter of sorts. Assuming the gauge is ok, the reading will only fluctuate if the voltage in the circuit fluctuates and that could mean the supply voltage is fluctuating or the resistance of the ground path is fluctuating.

With the traditional circuit the gauge is supplied by an electronically stabilised voltage and the ground path resistance is varied by the engine coolant temperature sensor and fluctuations could be anything from a faulty instrument voltage regulator, through faulty wiring or connections to the temperature actually fluctuating.

If the gauge is driven by the engine management the same approximately applies but checking the circuit becomes much more complex due to the need for circuit diagrams and specialised test equipment, though these would not be needed just to check the security of the gauge in the printed circuit of the instrument panel.

Why is temp gauge fluctuating while driving car is not hot.


Check the coolant level. Sometimes when the coolant level is low, it will cause gauge fluctuations like you suggest, since air is getting into the cooling system. When air is in the system, it causes the thermostat to open and close frequently resulting is wild temp gauge swings.

Nothing, you are obviously doing something wrong. They call it a 12v battery for a reason.

Have the fault codes read. Have a load test done on the battery as all the faults could be low battery voltage or failing battery

Voltage gauge fluctuates on 1995 corvette when turn signal is on


It should fluctuate, some.
The signals would put a small load on the system which would show up on the gauge. More than say a volt or two might be a problem.
Same thing when the blower motor or headlights are turned on.
The alternator should recover the loss.

I seem to have a charging of the battery problem. I would get 14 volts to my battery from my alternator and then 6 volts, i changed m alternator and things were going great, no problems. Now it is acting...

If you were originally having a wild fluctuation in measurement at the battery the voltage regulator would have been shot. I'm not sure of what the condition was of the original alternator. But I would definitely have changed the voltage regulator. A bad regulator can ruin a battery and all sorts of other things. If you are now getting wild variations in voltage
1st Purchase and install a new voltage regulator. (probably about $20.00 these days.
Then check your new battery by doing the following:
1 Disconnect it from the truck's electrical system.
2 Charge it up using another vehicle and jumpers.
3 After disconnecting the battery from the jumpers, let it sit for a few minutes.
4 Check the voltage. If it is below 12 volts, the battery is shot. Replace it under warranty.
5 When you get the new battery, Install it in the truck and start it up. Then measure the voltages coming into the battery from the alternator and the new voltage regulator.
If all is well, your done.
If not. Pull the alternator and replace that.

Is something wrong if the reading is at 18-19? or should it read 14?


If you are talking about charging voltage, 18 or 19 is far too high and can easily damage electrical components and boil the water out of your battery. Most problems like that are the result of a grounded field wire or a bad voltage regulator. Unfortunately, the regulator is part of the computer
(would really like to meet the engineer who thought that one up). Before replacing anything make sure the battery holds a charge and can pass a load test. A bad battery can often cause the charging system to run wild.

Infrequently my head and dash lights dimm and the engine about stalls out. replaced the alternator today still with the same problem. the voltage will go from 14-13.5 v and drop down to 11.5 to 12 v.


the voltage reading you gave ,are they with a multi meter at the battery post? or watching the gauge,
with the car not running check what voltage is at battery post,then check voltage on large wire on alternator and battery ground,see if they are exactly the same,they should be.now move ground to engine and see if still the same voltage,should be.start car and check voltage at alternator post and ground again,see if it fluctuates from there,it sound like the regulator in side the alternator is not keeping up with a load on the system,possible bad diode.

2006 Chevy Silverado alternator intermittent charging


Perfectly normal.
Starting with the 2005 model year, light duty full size pickups and utilities are equipped with a new Regulated Voltage Control (RVC) system. This system reduces the targeted output of the generator to 12.6-13.1 volts when in "Fuel Economy Mode" to improve fuel economy. The generator may exit "Fuel Economy Mode" if additional voltage is required. This will cause the voltmeter to fluctuate between 12 and 14 volts as opposed to non-regulated systems that usually maintain a more consistent reading of 14 volts. This fluctuation with the RVC system is normal system operation and NO repairs should be attempted.
