2003 polo classic takes less than a minute to reach the 90 degree mark, the heater does not work, fan only comes on when you have the dialler on full. does thermostat come complete with its housing?

Hi! Was the thermostat and other items replaced due to this overheating? you say coolant level full? maybe your header tank is full but the system isn't? Try bleeding the system. From cold, start the engine with radiator/header tank cap OFF stay with the vehicle and have some very warm water handy. DON'T look over the filler but watch it as the car gets to operating temperature if the water drops drastically top it up with warm water again stay with the car it may take a long time to level out. If the car is bubbling furiously and doesn't want to settle then possible HEAD GASKET Failure or Water pump.
Does your oil look milky on the dipstick? is there an excessive amount of water coming out of the exhaust? are your hoses swelling with radiator/header tank cap on at operating temp?
Sorry to be the possible bearer of bad tiding if the Gasket has gone, but better to sort it now than cause irreprable damage?

Your Problem Can VERY WELL BE with the Temp Sensor, As It Is the First in This Electrucal Circut . it Waits for 210-230 Degree Engine temp and Gives that Sygnal to the ECM then ECM Grounds out the Cooling FAN RELAY To Turn ON the FANS and the Temp Sensor is Usualy THE #1 Culpret Closley in front of the RELAY.
There are 2 Sensors On this Vehicle The One You Replaced and One Located At Trans Side of
Engine Closer to Front of Vehicle At the Head ,Thereis a 2 wire Plug On it and This Sensor Goes to the ECT witch CONTROLS COOLING FAN RELAY. Hope this Helps and if you Need A Diagram For this It Must be Emailed as FixYa Does NOT Support Large Picture Files. My Email Add. Is MY

u have a leak in the heater core the oily smell and mist is anti freeze sounds like a small leak because usually u would have a wet floor if it was large -two choices check and repair as necessary the core or can use an additive with a stop leak they usually work well on small leaks

this sounds like a thermostat fault, but also could be the sensor switch to the radiator but is more likely the thermostat, it should be located at the front top of engine, follow the top water hose to the engine and you will find the thermostat housing, also just a heads up, these had a problem when first made, according to the known fixes and problems with VW's the hoses corroded inside and started loosing water, this could be wise to get the system presure checked to...hope this helps

I would check the thermostat first. Remove the thermostat and place it in a pan of water on the stove. Place a thermometer in the water with the thermostat and slowly increase the temperature until you have reached 194 degrees Fahrenheit or 90 degrees Celsius. Watch closely for the thermostat to open slightly. If it opens then the thermostat is good. If it does not open, replace it. Try that first and see what you come up with.

Check to see if the radiator and overflow tank are full, that the cooling fan is coming on when the engine reaches 220 degrees, and that the thermostat is opening around 195 degrees.

How do i know my 2003 FORD RANGERS thermostat is not working?


You should be able to start your engine, with the heat and air off, let it run for 6 to 8 minutes to allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature.

Once operating temperature is reached, turn on your heater to full hot and the fan wide open. listen very closely in the engine compartment, you should be a ble to hear a small click from the thermostat openening up to circulate the coolant.

Heater does not put out any heat front or rear. Car just came back from shop after an accident. radiator and pcm were among the parts replaced.


It's possible they installed the wrong thermostat, or left it out completely. Check the antifreeze to see if it is protected against freezing temperatures. Make sure the cooling fan, or fans are not running all th time. If they are running full time, the engine will have a hard time reaching operating temperature. Take off the radiator cap and start the engine. Let it run for quite a while you watch to see how the coolant is flowing through the radiator. It should not start flowing until it gets warm enough to open the thermostat, which would be a least 195 degrees F. And the cooling fans shouldn't come on until some time after that. If the cooling fans are running when the engine is cold then they didn't hook up the thermostat fan switch. If the repair shop is a good reputable business, they should make good on the repair until everything is working as it should. Take it back to them and explain the problem to them. Be calm and courteous and try to do it in front of other customers. That always helps. Good luck.

Do you mean 1.7L? I do not see a 1.6L in the manual. Instructions from autozone.com are pasted below.

NOTE Adjust valves only when the cylinder head temperature is less than 100 degrees F.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Note the radio security code and the radio presets.
  3. Remove the ignition coil cover. Remove the ignition coils. Remove the throttle cable clamps and harness holder from the cylinder head cover.
  4. Remove the cylinder head cover retaining bolts. Remove the cylinder head cover from the engine.
  5. Remove the grommet from the upper cover and disconnect the camshaft position (CMO) sensor connector. Remove the upper cover.
  6. Set the number one piston at TDC. The UP mark on the camshaft pulley should be at the top, and the TDC marks on the pulley should line up with the top edge of the cylinder head.
  7. Using the proper gauge feeler gauge, adjust the valves on cylinder number one.
  8. Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees counterclockwise. The UP mark on the camshaft pulley should be toward the exhaust side of the cylinder head.
  9. Using the proper gauge feeler gauge, adjust the valves on cylinder number three.
  10. Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees counterclockwise and bring the number four piston to TDC.
  11. Using the proper gauge feeler gauge, adjust the valves on cylinder number four.
  12. Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees counterclockwise. The UP mark on the camshaft pulley should be toward the intake side of the cylinder head.
  13. Using the proper gauge feeler gauge, adjust the valves on cylinder number two.
  14. Install the cylinder head cover.
  15. As required, reprogram the ECM/PCM engine idle characteristics. Be sure all electrical items are OFF.
  16. Start the engine. Hold the idle speed at 3000 RPM-s in park or neutral until the radiator fan comes on or the temperature reached 194 degrees.
  17. Let the engine idle for about five minutes with the throttle fully closed.
  18. If the radiator fan comes on during the five minutes, do not count this toward the five minute programming time.
  19. Set the clock.

My chevy venture 2003 only over heats when it is still with the engine on but it does not over heat when i drive it, what could it be?


Odds are your electric cooling fan[s] isn't coming on. This fan should only run when the a/c is on or when the engine temperature has reached about 218 degrees. Once the a/c is off or the engine temp drops to about 210 degrees it shuts back off again. It rarely comes on at speeds over about 35 mph because at that speed enough air is forced through the radiator to keep the engine at about 198 degrees. I would start by looking for a blown 30 amp fuse under the hood. There may be two of them marked "Cooling fan 1" and "Cooling fan 2" or something similar. If the fuses are good you could have a faulty cooling fan motor that just isn't running. Hope this helps a bit!

Radiator Fan dont kick on


The fan will kick in when the temp reaches 90 degrees celcius. It could also be a bad fan or a bad fan relay

VW Polo Classic 1.6 Radiator fan not going on


Try moving the fan blades by hand to see if the fan spins freely to see if the problem is frozen bearings in the fan motor. Replace the fan motor if it doesn't turn. If it spins freely disconnect the wires and hook the fan directly to the battery using a jumper. If it runs the problem is most likely the thermostatic switch. If it doesn't the fan motor is bad.
