Check the E.G.R. and cracks in the vacuum lines. It should sound like its trying to die. That is normal. Or the timing is off.

Here's a trick that always works. Get a hose and a powdered detergent. Soak the soap in the water and put it in the exhaust till it flows out. After that spray the tail pipe with water till the carbon goes out. This will clean the exhaust system and you will surely pass the smog test.
