First there is no fault code that tells you to replace any particular part, you must do the troubleshooting for the code or codes received, never take advice from a minimum wage parts person at Autozone, they just want to sell you parts, they are not trained technicians and should not hand out advice that costs you money and wasted time, not to mention you can't return electrical parts.

Why does my 2001 cavalier die when coming to a stop?

If it dies when you are coming to a stop after being on the freeway, chances are the torque converter solenoid is sticking in the transmission.
If it is doing it around town, I would look at the throttle body and idle air control valve. The computer controls idle speed by regulating air flow into the throttle body.

2001 Ford Taurus v6, car starts and immediately shuts off, ran fine yesterday, very cold this am, lows in the teens. I am thinking fuel filter or fuek problem,

1 st check for codes on the computer. This is usually a sign of a bad crank position sensor. Go to autozone.com and become a member. Then you can use the repair guide to show you how to test and or replace the sensor.

If you can keep the car running by pressing the gas pedal then I would look at the idle air control valve. It may be gunked up. A can of spray carb cleaner will clean it nicely.

1997 chevy cavalier 2.4 twin cam engine dogs out when throttling

Possibly bad tpos sensor

Bad idle air control valve

Bad maf sensor

Check the computer codes first before spending any more money on it

Also do a compression check

And check your valve timing and ignition timing just in case.

How to locate idle air control valve?

It's located on the left rear of throttle body assembly. I looks like a small metal cylinder with two bolts and an oval plug with 4 prongs. Yes you can change it yourself. If you can't find it, go to your local auto parts store and have them show you a picture.

I have a 96 cavalier z24. when I start it up the

Autozone and similar stores will check the codes in the computer for free usually. That is the best place to start. Other possibilities are Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (saying the engine is cold when it's not) or excessive fuel pressure (bad regulator or blocked return line)
