SOURCE: just started getting a loud knocking noise comming

what I would try first is replace the oil pump. you say you're not getting oil to your lifters. no oil pressure is a sign of bad oil pump. I had a ford fairmont do the same thing, and once I replaced the oil pump; put a WIX oil filter on. and used a blended(syn and reg) oil, it fixed it. don't start anymore until you've done this.

SOURCE: Does 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 have hydraulic

I would not believe any thing some parts store loser told you. Theres not a V8 built that doesnt have hydraulic lifters, unless its some fancy racin engine. It has hydraulic lifters, but unless you dont change your oil every 5k miles and/or use some cheap oil, there should be no problems. You should have a real mechanic look at it, and verify that you have good oil pressure. If it does, I would change the oil and use some MOBIL 1 and drive it, the oil will clean the lifters somewhat. If the eng has low oil pressure, that will need to be addressed.

Tappets making noise on 4y petrol engine 2.2

Tappets making noise on a 4Y petrol engine 2.2 may be caused by a few different things. Here are a few possible causes and solutions:
  1. Lack of oil pressure - If the engine is low on oil, the oil pump may not be able to provide enough pressure to properly lubricate the tappets. Check the oil level and top it up if necessary.
  2. Worn tappets - Tappets can wear out over time, especially if the engine has high mileage. Worn tappets can cause noise and can be replaced.
  3. Loose tappet adjusters - Tappet adjusters can become loose, which can cause noise. Tighten the adjusters according to the manufacturer's specifications.
  4. Valve clearance - The valve clearance may need to be adjusted. if the clearance is too tight or too loose, it can cause noise.
  5. Dirty engine - If the engine is dirty, the tappets may become clogged with debris, causing the noise. Clean the engine thoroughly to remove any debris.
  6. Oil Quality - If the oil you are using is not of good quality or if it is too thick, it will not lubricate the tappets properly, causing the noise.
It's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and use the right tools and equipment when working on the machine. If you are not familiar with the mechanical systems, it's best to take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic to diagnose and fix the issue.

After sitting over night, start it and it makes clattering noise top front of motor for about 30 seconds and stops. runs great, already changed water pump, belt etc. new power steering pump also.

change the oil filter to a better quality wit an anti-drain back valve , change oil and up grade to 30w-50 oil viscosity
remove and check the leak back rate for the hydraulic followers
the problem is that the oil drains back from the valve train resulting in a noise until oil pressure is restored

Does this car take a valve lash adjustment and what are the settings

Your car has hydraulic lifters. Hydraulic lifters just means that it uses engine oil to control the valve clearances using a bucket and shim arrangement.
Here's a generic image of what a hydraulic lifter can look like:25949035-hsh3lir2aljnaf1jzrgt1uh1-5-0.jpg

If the car makes a tapping sound at start up, this points to a problem in the camshaft area - including the hydraulic lifers/shims. Valve clearances are controlled by the lifters and shims. It could also be a worn camshaft - the lobes can become rounded.

Usually, there is no adjustment possible with most hydraulic lifters. Replacement (usually) means you have to remove the camshaft, though I am by no means certain about your particular model.

If you have the tools and ability, remove the rocker cover and have a look at things.

25949035-hsh3lir2aljnaf1jzrgt1uh1-5-1.jpg The image above shows a camshaft - the lobe is worn and rounded. When this happens valve clearance is excessive and may lead to a tapping noise. Engine efficiency is also affected.

The image below shows hydraulic lifters (example only..).
The lifter on the left has a 'dished' surface - wear caused by the camshaft or the lifter not being able to 'turn' in its bore.
25949035-hsh3lir2aljnaf1jzrgt1uh1-5-3.jpg The usual cause of this is (a) short trips where the engine hasn't had a chance to warm up properly and pump oil to the camshaft area (b) poor oil/infrequent oil changes (c) stuck lifter.

Before you spend money on parts or repairs, first try adding some oil flush to the engine to clear out carbon and 'sticky' deposits.

25949035-hsh3lir2aljnaf1jzrgt1uh1-5-10.jpg
... follow the instructions on the bottle...
Then change your engine oil and add something like a 'valve train additive' - this will try and quieten the tapping noise.
The (Ebay) link below will give you an idea of what additives are available (and so will your local car accessory shop).

Try the cheapest and easiest first. If that doesn't work .. unless you are confident that you can inspect, diagnose and replace parts .. give a mobile mechanic a call. Those guys are usually quite good.

Engine noise when starts

Sounds like you need to run a thinner oil maybe. The oil is not pressurizing the engine components quickly and you hear was is called engine tappets. The rockers on some cars have what are called hydraulic lifters. They fill with oil after startup and then the sound goes away. You may think about having the lifters replaced soon, which are not too expensive. Be sure your vehicle has hydraulic lifters also. If your mechanic is any good he will know if it does or not. He maybe waiting for it to cause engine damage also, and knowing you will return to him to have it repaired also. Be careful.

Loud engine noise when driving

I have asked for clarification on this. Possible causes are bearings like wheel bearings, locked up engine cooling fan clutch and noise in the rear differential from gear problems.

Tikking noise coming from engine

Yes, you're right, those could be the cause. Also, possible it's a collapsed hydraulic valve lifter, if your car has hydraulic operated (from engine oil) valve lifters. At any rate, it sounds like something loose in the valve train-valve lifter with push rod engines; or cam followers {rocker arms) with overhead cam engines that push on the top of valve stems .
Check a repair manual to see if your engine has valves that can be and need adjusting. Engines with valve lifters do not require periodic adjustment for proper valve clearance. Engines with rocker arms do require checking the valve clearance every couple of years or so.

Top of the engine is ticking. friend told me it could be a valve that is clogged or stuck open and thats its not a huge problem but it might be mixing gas and oil. to me that sounds like a problme....

It sounds like hydraulic lifter noise. The lifters open and shut the valves and can be helped by using a good synthetic oil and frequent oil changes. Lash is the clearance between the valves and lifters.

My 94 Suburu Loyale Started doing a steady ticking noise, What could it be?

Hi, it is likely you have a bad valve lash adjuster. Pretty common in these cars, as I helped another customer with the same problem. The labor to fix this was a lot, because the engine had to be disassembled. Repair procedures are available if you are inclined to do the work yourself.
Thanks for using FixYa.
