Ok,i took the transmission out of my 95 jeep grand chererkee but the torque converter won't slide off the shaft ,any suggestions on how to get it off

Spray some penetrating oil then start tapping it with a dead blow hammer to break rust and crud seal also dont use metal pry bar chance of cracking case use 2x4 or 2x1

Hello , You could have a leak at the transmission dip stick tube o-ring, the front pump gasket, the torque converter seal , the transmission output shaft seal or the transmission oil cooler lines. I suggest you put the car on a lift to make it easier to see where the leak is coming from.

1998 jeep grand cherokee 4x4. have the p0740 code. have to start from neutral, then shifts faily well. May start fluttering and making noise, have to put back to N, then to D and once again will shift. ...


P0740 JEEP - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit
Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Transmission shift shock
- Vehicle may not shift into the highest gear

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness or connectors
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted

When is the code detected?
Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) unlocked for 10 sec., ECM commands converter lock-up and did not record engine speed drop.

P0740 JEEP Description
The torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, with the gear in D4, by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the vehicle speed and the Engine Control Module (ECM). Lock-up piston operation will then be controlled. When the torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, the torque converter lockup clutch will engage creating a 1 to 1 RPM ratio between the transmission input shaft and the rotational speed of the torque converter.

Lock-up operation, however, is prohibited when A/T fluid temperature is too low.

When the accelerator pedal is depressed (less than 2/8) in lock-up condition, the engine speed should not change abruptly. If there is a big jump in engine speed, there is no lock-up.

Location of torque converter


your torque converter is located between the engine and transmission, it slips into the trans on the input shaft which drives the pump and bolts to the rear of the engine onto a flywheel which is bolted onto the rear of the crank.

How to change a torque converter


You have to remove either the engine or transmission, whichever's easier. Front wheel drives are usually easier to remove the transmission, which will require removing both CV shafts, brakes, hubs, and struts. You then unbolt the transmission from the engine, slide it back a little, unbolt the torque converter from the flywheel, and drop the transmission out of the bottom of the car, and then you can pull the torque converter off the transmission and replace it.

Dont waste your time and money trying to use a transmission stop leak product, they don't work on large leaks, you say the leak is excessive in this case the you must remove the transmission to access and remove the torque converter, after you have removed the torque converter carefully inspect the torque convert imput shaft for wear and also you will need to visually inspect the transmission front pump bushing for wear also, I have seen it all to often people just replace the seal thinking it was just a seal failure, well more times than not there is a reason for seal more than just the age of the seal, excessive wear on trans pump bushing and torque converter imput shaft is usaully the cause, check and repair those as good practice during this repair unless you just like to do the repair over again for free... also check the torque converter run out, sometime when they are repaired they are welded back together somewhat crooked which will cause it to spin off of a true center, this will cause immediate damage to transmission. Check also your engines crankshaft end play for looseness this can cause wobble which will transfer to transmission causing this problem as well... do the repair thouroughly and who ever does it for you have them check all that I listed and you should get a good repair which will last without issues.... please rate my help thanks...

It sounds like the torque converter is locked up. Possible a bad torque converter or converter solenoid. First thing you should try is unplugging the solenoid plug on the transmission. Drivers side, near the shifter. Not the three pin connector near the pan on the same side. The connector you want is higher than the reverse light plug.

Transmission quit moving no noise, nothing grinding etc..


If it doesn't move forward or backward, then the pump or torque converter are likely bad. First put it in drive with the rear wheels up. Pull out the speed sensor in the overdrive unit( rear housing on the trans) and look in the hole to see if the output shaft is turning. This will tell you if this is a trans problem or a transfer case problem. If it is turning but the rear drive shaft isn't, inspect the transfer case. If the output shaft isn't turning, hook up a pressure gauge to the transmission and check for line pressure. If line pressure is low, replace the pump. If line pressure is good, replace the torque converter.
