Yes, they heat up like a heating element and buckle. That stuff really isn't water, it is Sulphuric Acid. You add distilled water to replace the water content which evaporates.

Yes
in fact batteries with out any water indicate over voltage charging
maximum charge rate for batteries is 14.5-14.8 volts
any lower and the batteries will not charge --any higher and they boil off the electrolyte leaving the cells dry

Brake light, battery light, service engine soon light on. white smoke from under the hood. area near belts loud and I smelled burning rubber. put car in park the engine shut off. What's the problem?

If your battery light came on, and you smelled burning rubber, it could be that your belt that drives the alternator, which charges your battery is broken or flipped upside down. Do not drive with the battery light on or else you will stop dead when the battery does not have enough charge in it to keep the car running. If you decide to drive and not follow my advice, then be sure all extra electrical power is off eg. radio, fan, DVD, lights etc.

Get up this morning car wont turn over, charged batterie , getting full charge and nothing, although the lights and dash lights come on. can anyone tell me what to check next?

These cars have the top post batteries, so the next step is to clean the cable ends, and posts on the battery. Even if they look ok, a small amount of corrosion on the inside or a loose cable stops these cars. They make a tool to clean these, but a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of warm water and an old toothbrush should get you going. Don't forget rubber gloves, the acid burns!

Battery light burning

How I would solve this problem:

Check water level in battery if maintenance battery
Make sure both battery terminals are clean - use a battery terminal cleaner tool or wire brush.
Use a battery charger to see if battery is charged to 100%
If your battery is 100% percent I would put a voltmeter on your battery to see if your alternator is functioning properly. Depending on how many miles you have on your Jetta these Bosch brushes in the wear out. Replace the alternator if the output on the voltmeter is less than 14 volts.

What damage can be done by the alternator over charging?

If overcharging to much can damage the computer and burn up the battery, if the battery is a service free battery then it could boil the water out and if their is a spark it could cause the battery to explode. Most free maintenance batteries are not maintenance free, they can still have water added to them and need cleaning from time to time as the posts corrode up.

1993 mazda 626 LX 2.0L. Smelled burning smell for about 10 seconds, then overheating began. No heat coming from heater, and Charge light; all happen at same time. Also, rear light came on too. Thought it...

Sounds like you have burned a belt off the pulley for the alternator and water pump. Dont drive the car until you have verified the belt is intact and the water pump is turning. Something had to have caused it if it did, I would suspect water pump, alternator, or air conditioning compressor has siezed if your car is equipped with it.

How can i revive a faulty car battery

Most time's you can not revive them. But the best way to check if it can is. Remove all the caps and put in on a charger. With the charger turned on check if the acid in any of the cell's bubble's. If any of them does then it has a faulty cell and cannot be revived. If it just got run down completely and let sit for a while without charge this causes the acid to return to distilled water. To bring it back to acid it must be put on a very slow charge for 24 hours. You will need a special charger for this because most small charger's won't go low enough they will charge up the battery to fast and the distilled water wont hold the charge. I bought a slow charger it was for a motorbike battery it was'nt expensive but it burned out charging the first battery. Charger was only a bit cheaper than a battery so ever since when I have a problem I just buy a new one. Sorry this not what you wanted to hear and is only my experience and oppinion. Cheers

My 1996 nissan altima wont keep a charge ,I had the alt checked replaced the batt checked for ground (negative post) same thing batt light and loosing charge

Cables from alt to battery can be deposited/burned/oxidized. In this case battery wont get charged. Also check the alternator connections. Cable might be burned or not tight enough
Also serpentine belt might be not tight enough
Good Luck

Smell under the hood...like a burning smell..temperature light

You are having a problem with the alternator or the serpintine belt that powers the alternator, a/c, water pump and power steering. The belt is either not properly tensioned or the alternator, or water pump is siezing up which would explain the loss of water and the battery light. Likely the water pump might be bad since you are losing some water.

The belt powers all of the systems you mentioned so I would find the belt on the passenger side of the car and go from there. It is pretty well in there and hard as hell to reach so you will likely need to take it to someone with a lift and some good tools. The good news is that this is drivable so you should be able to get it addressed before the belt completly snaps from whatever system is being broken and melts onto something making the problem even worse.

Bmw320 td se 1999-2000 model battery warning light came on smoke

Sounds like your water pump is out or siezed momentarily. This would cause your alternator to not charge your battery (hence battery light) and also would explain the water. The smoke would have been caused by the friction from the belt. Does the car still run?
