Hall sensor function
A hall effect sensor is a sensor that produces a square wave output that can be directly read and modulated by the ECM (as opposed to an AC wave sensor which produces a sine wave that must be converted). They are used as cam position sensors and ABS wheel speed sensors.

The Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor detects the position of the camshaft in order to identifiy when piston No. 1 is on its compression stroke. The CMP sensor is used for ignition timing in the Ford DIS igntion system, but not in the EDIS igntion system. Both DIS/EDIS use the CMP signal for synchronizing the firing of sequential fuel injectors.

On the 3.0L vulcan engine, the CMP signal is generated by a single Hall-Effect magnetic switch, activated by a single "vane" spinning around by virture of a synchronized shaft which is driven by the camshaft. 

The CMP sensor & synchronizer/shaft are located behind the intake manifold (i.e., back near the firewall on a Ranger) on the top of the cylinder block. If you just need to replace the sensor, it is a simple job of unplugging the electrical connector and removing the screws holding the sensor in place. Here is a sketch of the sensor to give you an idea what to look for:

SOURCE: replacing bad camshaft position sensor

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Remove water pump pulley attaching bolts, then the serpentine belt and water pump pulley.
  3. Disconnect sensor wiring connector and remove sensor retaining bolt.
  4. Twist and pull sensor to remove.
Reverse procedure to install and prior to installing new sensor, lubricate sensor O-ring.

It is located under the water pump. Make sure when you remove the sensor that you rotate the crank shaft and look in the hole to make sure the pick up magnet is still in there. Sometimes they come loose and cause a no start or long crank. You will need to have the code cleared still.

The camshaft position sensor is on the rear cylinder head on the left end (the serpentine belt end of the engine - passenger side). It is a son-of-a gun to get at. When it is bad or the connector is intermittant or bad, the symptom will be irregular idle from 500 to 750 RPM or so.

when you are looking at the engine pull off the plastic cover on top then the front cover that covers you timing belt there is a wire harness tha goes right to it in the left upper coner two ten mil bolts and it comes off careful not to drop bolts down in belt that could be bad. it is that easy

On 2 wire Sensor engines, the distributor stator or Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is a single Hall effect magnetic switch. This is activated by a single vane, and is driven by the camshaft.

On Three Wire Sensor engines, the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is a variable reluctance sensor, which is triggered by the high-point mark on one of the camshaft sprockets.

The Distributor engine does not use a separate CMP sensor. It utilizes a conventional distributor, equipped with a Hall effect device, for this function.

The following symptoms can be caused by intermittent wiring connections or faulty signal to the EMS.

On an overhead camshaft engine, look for the camshaft sensor near the end of the camshaft pulley area on the left or right side of the engine.

Where is the location of camshaft sensor, vehicle will not start


The camshaft position sensor (CMP) on the 3.0L OHC (4 valve) and 3.4L SHO engines is a variable reluctance sensor that is triggered by a high point on the left-hand exhaust camshaft sprocket. The CMP sends a signal relating camshaft position back to the PCM which is used by the PCM to control engine timing.

The camshaft position sensor (CMP) on the 3.0L OHV (2 valve) engine is a single hall-effect magnetic switch that is triggered by a single vane which is driven by the camshaft. The CMP sends a signal relating camshaft position back to the PCM which is used by the PCM to control engine timing.

This code could mean:
  • the camshaft position sensor could be defective,
  • the camshaft synchronizer (the part that took the place of the distributor on DIS engines) has failed,
  • if you have recently had the camshaft synchronizer replaced it could be out of time.
