This vehicle does not use points, it has a solid state magnetic pick up to trigger ignition. Try changing the air filter. A dirty air filter can put the MAF ( mass airflow sensor) out of range.

I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla. After 5000 miles without an oil change the "Maintenance Required Light" turns on. After getting an oil change, the light will stay on unless someone does something...

1) Get into the car and close the driver's door

2) Put your key in the ignition, but don't turn it.

3) With your left hand, press and hold the odometer reset button (its somewhere near the odometer)

4) With your right hand, turn the key to the position right before start while still holding down the reset button with your left hand.

5) While still holding the reset button, you will see your odometer show up as 000000, keep holding the button until all the zeros disappear.

6) After all the zeros are gone, your odometer will show back up and the "Maint REQ" light will go away.

If you need more detailed instructions, consult your owner's manual. The procedure is outlined there with pictures.

I ran out of gas and when i put some in it wont start

let the pump run a while (key in "on" position) to get gas to the fuel rail. Try starting after a few minutes.

Starting problem

Due to the age of the car, most likely the circuit that controls the starter solenoid has greater resistance than the current flowing through the circuit. The fix would be to replace the electric part of the ignition switch. There should be two wires going to your starter. One is from the positive post of the battery (+). It is the larger of the two wires. The smaller wire is the wire that controls the solenoid and if you read the voltage to that wire when you put your key in the start position, you will find that the solenoid wire will read less than 12 volts DC some of the time when you put the key in the start position. Replacing the ignition switch will fix this problem
