Hi Sandra:
With hydraulic lifters (tappets), I've set them "by ear" by backing them off (with the engine running) until they start to click, then snugging them until the click stops. "Old school", but has worked for years for me.
You'll need to give us make and model to be able to try to help with the timing.

we can not answer, unless
1: country stated, usa or canada is my guess.
2: no engines stated, of the 4 opted day one sales.
3: no year car, wow , now that makes this 10000 harder.
sounds (Im, deaf) like the cam was timed wrong to me.
or if old car, the distributor and cam timed wrong

are you building engines book free.
why do that. pure ttorture?

backfiring means, "You timed me wrong"

I changed engine blocks on my log skidder, it has a 5.9 cummins. Used the same injector pump and new injectors, the engine starts and runs idle good but has no power.tried timing it a different way 100...


easy, no year stated nor injection system. (old pump, mpi or direct injected)
my guess is the pump has issues or the fuel feed to it is restricted.
id buy the FSM that matches that engine,and real the injection chapters, and all tests stated there.
any time im at a stall, out comes books, or online versionl

Where to find the indicator fuse on GWM 2.2 MPI


If something quits in your car and you suspect a blown fuse, you can find it by pulling out each fuse one by one. Don't mix them up, replace each one as you go, across the top or down the sides, make sure to look at each one. You may even find you have more than one bown fuse! Don't worry about your intended location, checking them all this way will take less than a minute of time. If you have some needle-nose plyers, they work very well, most times you can use your fingers. If its new why isn't the dealer sorting it out?
Look up under the dash kick panel and see if the steering column is rubbing on something when rotating?

Vehicle is started while in neutral then is engaged to first gear and this is when the vehicle die


I must assume the car is a A/T automatic transmission?
Ok this is called stalling.
the one key fact is missing, can the fast right foot , make the car
drive fast up hills. that is you prevent the stall and drive.?
lacking this fact, makes all below too long........

the 95 sidekicks cam with 2 engines.
one is TBI 8v and other is 16v MPI, the repair is totally different on these cars, due to vastly different EFI systems.

so i will answer in the generic , lacking these facts.
1: idle speed controls dead.
2: engine problems, (low compression)
3: never ever tuned up? never did the 60,000 mile service.?
4: same as #3 timing belt slipped,
5: spark parts never replaced. plugs, wires ,cap, and rotor.?
6: weak fuel pressure do to never changing the fuel filter ever.
7: clogged injectors.
8: if MPI engine, huge air leaks in the induction (from behind the MAF all the way to the intake valves.. bad news on MPI , air leaks.
aka: vacuum leaks.
just a short list. for now.

The cranking will usually sound different after the timing chain has slipped. Does it spit or backfire when you crank it? I suggest you rule out some easier things before going after the timing chain. If you are getting spark and fuel, then maybe I would take a peek at the timing chain to see if it has skipped on the sprocket.
