Yes, that could stop the starter motor from working.

Engine wont stop cranking after releasing key

This is usually a mechanical issue. It is caused by either
  1. The starter not being properly shimmed out on installation and the starter teeth are getting hung up in the flywheel and won't release after starting.
  2. The return spring in the starter solenoid has broken and won't retract the starter gear.
If the starter has been in the vehicle for a while and has worked well, then #2 is more likely. On rare occasions, an electrical problem could be keeping the starter engaged, but this is not the norm.

I need a spring that holes brushes in on a gew 9000 winch motor thanks

most winch motors are basic starter motors. Take the remaining spring along to an auto electrician to see if it can be identified.
Contact the winch manufacturer to see if they have a parts catalogue for the motor.

I have a 2005 mazda 3 and I think that the starter is buisted how can I fix this without going to a shop?

easy answer, you can't..
You may be able to get a second hand unit and then remove your existing starter and fit the replacement but I would NOT advise you to disassemble the starter motor yourself.
There are parts inside the motor (bushes and brushes) that will be damaged by incorrect disassembly. The springs which maintain contact between the brushes and the commutator can (and do) pop out and disappear into the wide world and replacing them can prove difficult.
The solenoid WILL be damaged if you attempt to disassemble it incorrectly and some solenoids have several small parts which will fly out and end up in the same place as the brush springs, the same place socks, earings and loose change go to.. the land of nowhere.
So, either change the starter yourself or bite the bullet and take the starter to a qualified person..
Remember, if you really want to remove the starter yourself, disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery BEFORE you do anything else..

01 chevy duramax replaced starter 5 weeks ago every thing was fine now starter stays tryin to start after truck starts for about 30 seconds and then it stops please help what could it be

It sounds like a shim missing. The starter bendex is not releasing fast enough do to binding and the revilutions of the ring gear keeps it spinning until the sintrivical force drives it back. Hope this helps.

Can a starter work one min and the next fail, and after a couple of min act like nothing is wrong turn on again

Hello Ira.
Yes, it can happen.
Usually when the starter is nearing the end of it's useful life.
There are brushes inside the starter motor that wear over time.
As these brushes wear the spring that keeps the tension on them also get weaker and will often not be strong enough to hold the brushes on the starter motor armature.
So what happens is these brushes end up losing and then making contact intermittently.
A similar problem can also happen with relays and solenoids that are also part of the starting system.
First inspect all connections related to the starting system as a corroded, loose or burned terminal are also possible problems.

93 ford escort starter problem

never mind "A"join the club there keep taking the pills
take a screw driver and short out the battery wire to the small terminal on the starter this should spin the starter over and the engine at the same time if nothing happens the solenoid cap on the starter is faulty, you should here it click in to spin the motor up
if it clicks but still no go then its the starter motor its self likley to be brushes

My bendix in my starter in my 1984 ford club wagon is going out how do i fix it???

first take off the starter look to see if the bendix is sticking it should turn out freely by hand if not wash it off with petrol and give it a light coating of thin oil working it well into the corse therds in the bendix then only if you are brave!!! clamp the starter into a vice or stand on it? and hock it up to a good battery using jump leads, it dont mater witch way round the go on the starter it will still only spin one way!!! the bendix should throw out all the way and then maybe come back in a little,,,
to get the bendix off the starter you need a bendix spring compresor to get at the spring clip that holds it all on to the end of the motor shaft,,, if its chewed up on the end of the drive dog you will need to remove it, but if its not that bad you could "grind the bad part away, till you get to a good bit" but dont take off more that 1/4 of an inch? dont forget to lube the starter motor bushes with light oil as well as often its not the bendx its the motor not spining up fast due to dry bearings

The electric motor comes on but the engine does

Is the motor turning? Only one fuse and the starter will not turn if it is bad. If the motor is not turning, make sure the belt is not slipping. If it is not slipping, make sure the engine will turn by hand. MAKE SURE KEY IS OFF BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR HANDS IN. If it seems free, you either have a weak battery or the brushes in the starter have worn out. I change at least 20 sets of brushes a year on Club Cars.
