It is either a blown head gasket or a cracked head. Depending on which motor your civic has, this could be a tricky replacement, either way, you have to remove the head off of the motor, and then take the head to have it pressure checked to see if there is a crack in it. Nine times out of ten though, you can see a crack in the head with your eye, but you have to have the right "eye" to be able to see the crack.

sounds like you have a airlock or air in the system. i had the same problem. there is two hoses that run along the value cover. undo the top one and plug it with a screw driver or something. then the other hose the one that runs to your water pump you need to install a T on it that you can attach a garden hose too. turn the hose on full blast. the water should come shooting on the engine where you disconnecting the hose. let the hose run for about 15mins or so. i jumped on the bumber a bit to shake the jeep. just to make sure all the air comes out. the point of this is that this is the highest point on the engine. so the water should force any air out. jeeps are bad for this any air in the system really messes things up. the transmission thing has nothing to do with this. good luck
