I assume you are replacing both and not just the rod. Reason for breaking the rod comes down to one of two things to my knowledge.
First reason, someone tried to tension the belt and didn't release the locking bolt that holds the inner setting of the tensioner as the rod IS NOT MENT TO HOLD THE TENSION. That bolt is a 10mm hex key bolt.
Second reason, rubber from tensioner has let go and shifted so that inner shaft sits to close to tension rod bracket on such an angle that it snaps of.

Removal...
Loosen 10mm hex key tension bolt at front of tensioner and remove belt. Once the belt is off, remove water pump pulley. Powerstering pump also needs to be unbolted so that you can move it somewhat to the right. you should be able to see several bolts holding the bracket that the locking bolt goes through. In addition there is a shockabsorber on the tensioner that is attached to the engine. once all them are undone/removed you should be able to remove the tensioner. The locking bolt is the longest and it lets you line everything up on reassembly. BUT DO NOT FULLY TIGHTEN UNTIL YOU HAVE TENSIONED THE BELT WITH THE ROD. Once you have tensioned it with the rod, tighten the locking bolt and just slightly undo the tension rod to take the stress of the thread. Remember the tension is held by the pressure of the lockingbolt against the inner steeltube of your tension assembly NOT THE ROD. If you are unsure of your steps for reassembly, take pictures with your phone step by step of the removal so you can check where goes what by the pictures.

hi from uk having lined ip timing marks on cogs? fit c/belt anticlockwise from crank pully cog then making sure that belt ist taut on none tensioner side ? slacken and re tighten tensioner bolt then turn crankshaft anti clockwise sixturns anticlockwise till c/shaft andcam marks re aligne ? now slacken tensioner bolt again and gently turn engine back/anti cockwise three teeth only!on the camshaft cog having done this tighten the tensioner bolt 44Nm final check !turn engine anti clockwisetill timing marks re aligne then if all ok ? re assemble engine hope this helps good luck !

Removing fan on 99 denali ?


Check the rotation of the bolts. My 99 Suburban was reverse threaded. I messed with it for an hour trying the lefty loosie/ righty tighty normal thinking before realizing it was reverse threaded and I needed to turn them to the right to loosen them.

(a) While turning the belt tensioner counterclockwise, align the service hole for the belt tensioner and the belt tensioner fixing position, and
then insert a bar of [diameter]5 mm (0.197 in.) into the service hole to fix the belt tensioner in place.
HINT: The pulley bolt for the belt tensioner has a left-hand thread.
(b) Remove the V belt.



1. INSTALL FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT
(a) Set the V belt onto every part.
(b) While turning the belt tensioner counterclockwise, remove the pin.
NOTICE: Make sure that the V belt is properly set to each pulley.
(c) After installing the belt, check that it fits properly in the ribbed grooves.
HINT: Make sure to check by hand that the belt has not slipped out of the grooves on the bottom of the pulley.

Trying to get diagram to change a timing belt for a 99 mercury mystique


Ford TSB 99-25-4 provides the following corrected information:
To achieve proper timing belt tension on this engine, Ford says the camshaft sprocket bolts should be loosened enough to permit the sprockets to turn freely on the camshafts. Once this has been done, rotate the crankshaft clockwise so cylinder No. 1 is at top dead center. Then, install the camshaft alignment tool in the camshaft slots to hold the cams in place.
  1. Back out the tensioner bolt four full turns and position the tensioner so the locating tab is at approximately the 4 o'clock position. Line up the hex key slot in the tensioner-adjusting washer with the pointer that is located behind the pulley.
  2. Working counterclockwise from the crank sprocket, install the timing belt.
  3. Rotate the tensioner locating tab counterclockwise and insert the locating tab into the slot in the rear timing cover.
  4. Position the hex key slot in the tensioner-adjusting washer to the 4 o'clock position.p>
  5. Tighten the attaching bolt enough to seat the tensioner firmly against the rear timing cover, but still allow the tensioner adjusting washer to be rotated using a 6 mm hex key.
  6. Using the hex key, rotate the adjusting washer counterclockwise until the notch in the pointer is centered over the index line on the locating tab. (The pointer will move in a clockwise direction during adjustment).
  7. While holding the adjusting washer in position, torque the attaching bolt to 18 lb-ft (25 N.m).
    Note: If the pointer does not remain centered over the index line during final tightening, loosen the bolt and repeat the procedure beginning with step 4.

Tricks to replacing serpentine belt on 97 jeep wrangler?


I just replaced water pump on my 97 wrangler, 4 cyl- without AC. Engines with AC are a little different. Since I don't have one, I can't saw how to change the belt--- but here it is for the 4 cylinder 1997 without AC.


So I had the belt off, and last thing was to put it back.

A. If you are unsure about memorizing the belt path, make your own drawing. If you are absolutely sure you can memorize the belt path---- make a drawing. Just some circles for each pulley.

Removing belt. Key mechanical location: The tensioning idler pulley. This adjustable tensioning pulley is on the right, below the power steering pump. It can be moved on a diagonal to tension the belt. The key to moving it is you must loosen the idler pulley mounting screw about two turns.

Locate the idler pulley. There is a hex head screw in the center. Use a 15 mm combination wrench to loosen this. Turn counter clockwise two turns.

Now, locate the tension adjusting screw. Look at about 10 oclock position above the idler pulley you just loosened, near the thermostat housing. There is a hex head that runs a long screw diagonally behind the plate. There is a block mounted to this screw that holds the idler. So turning this screw changes the tension.

Using a 15 mm wrench, turn this screw counter-clockwise to loosen the tension on the belt. A socket and ratchet drive will help. You will need a universal or a 3 in' "wobble" extension, because the thermostat housing and temperature sender are in the line of the hex head screw drive.

Good word: This rod is likely to be rusty and VERY stiff. Do not keep turning this if it is getting stiffer and stiffer. That means rust is jamming up the threads. Lubricate the block area on the back of the plate, directly behind the idler pulley, and work the tensioning screw backwards and forwards to get the threads cleaned up. If you have time, (probably an hour extra) you may wish to back the rod right out and remove it for wire brushing, and then re-install with marine grade anti-corrosion grease. I did this five years ago and it still is always moving freely.

Once tension is off, remove the belt.

Thread up the new belt. Expect to have to loosen the idler even MORE, because this new belt is not stretched at all.

Bring tension back up with the tensioner screw. Use your thumb to press on the belt on one of the long spans. Under moderate pressure it should move about 1/4 inch.

Tighten the pulley center screw to about 13 to 15 foot/lbs. If you do not have torque wrench, just make sure you don't use any more force than you can put on the wrench using only your "pinkie" finger. This is usually safe to prevent over-tightening anything on the outside of the engine.

A look at the FSM for the 97 shows:
BELT TENSION SPECIAL TOOLS BELT I SPECIFICATION
NEW SERPENTINE 800-900 N BELT (180-200 lbs. force) *
USED SERPENTINE 623-712 N BELT (140-160 lbs. force)

So if you have a tension measuring tool, then you can check it. If not, I suggest being conservative with tension. If it slips when wet, you can snug it up then. If you make the belt too tight, it wears out the water pump bearings.

Changing alternator belt in 1977 Delta 88


On the older cars, the alternator was attached by two mounting bolts. The long bolt goes through the alternator and is held on by a hex nut. The short bolt goes through a slotted curved piece into the alternator and is used for adjusting tension on the belt.

Depending on the location of the alternator, it may require you to work from the top of the engine or in some cases from under the car. Determine if any other belt is blocking the alternator belt. If so, this belt will have to be removed first to access the alternator belt.

Use a little penetrating fluid (e.g. PB Blaster) on the threads of both bolts and let it soak in to loosen up any corrosion. Using two wrenches/sockets(one to hold and one to loosen), loosen the long pivot mounting bolt; but do not remove. Then use a wrench or socket to loosen the short bolt and push the alternator towards the engine to allow the belt to be removed.

Installation is the reverse. You will have to lift the alternator up and outward to tighten the belt prior to tightening the short bolt. Then tighten the long bolt. Check tension by pressing down on the midpoint along the longest span between pulleys. Belt should not deflect more than 1/2 to 3/4 inch. If it does, loosen the two bolts and re-tension (you may need a pry bar for adjustment). Some setups use an idler pulley for adjusting tension.

Replace fan belt

its pretty simple use a wrench/hex which ever applies to the nut that on the tensioner some vehicle have a regular bolt type and some have a hex. Just follow illustration and push on tensioner using proper tool and release tension and belt and the belt will come and replace using the routing diagram I provided. Three things to check.... that you are putting on the exact specified part for that motor. second that it is being installed correctly... third that you are using the correct belt for that motor.... oh and a forth.... make sure that you are correctly routing the belt on all the pullies.
There should be a sticker with the correct routing of the serpentine belt either on the lower part of the engine compartment.... or look up at the hood when you have it open.
