Is the engine idling smoothly while this is happening?
The transmission oil filter may be clogged if yes

It depends on how violent the jerking is? Could be as simple as a plug &/or lead breaking down or as complicated as a fuel delivery problem. Sorry not much help, but I don't have much to go on..

I am not mechanically inclined so if I get an answer, keep that in mind. My 1998 Contour keeps jerking and shifting when I reach about 55 mph. I noticed the fan is not moving unless I turn the air on and...

Your vehicle jerking may be as simple as a dirty air filter that needs to be replaced. But a more serious problem would be a fuel pump defect, or the fuel injection system.
Now you didn't mention if you were driving a manual or automatic. So in the case of your car shifting, if its a manual it could be a misaligned transmission or something is loose in the clutch housing. But if your vehicle is an automatic you should check the transmission fluid (you do this while the car is running).

Nothing to do with valve control but o2 sensor should be replaced and also sounds like the engine is misfiring when gas is applied, this may be caused by a bad coil or sparkplug.when was your last tune up?, i would replace sensor and also make sure there are no other codes , even check for history codes.

while you are replacing it, replace the sock at the same time. That is the only "filter" that I am aware of. I had a problem that mimicked a slipping transmission that was because of the sock breaking down. When ever it got low on fuel, the transmission would act up.

IDLE SPEED TO LOW.MANUAL TRANSMISSION IDLE SPEED IS 750 RPM AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IDLE SPEED IS 850 RPM.IF IDLE SPEED IS CORRECT YOUR PROBLEM COULD BE STOPPED UP FUEL FILTER OR FAULTY SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES.YOUR IGNITION TIMING IS OFF.YOU COULD HAVE INTAKE VACUUM LEAK AT INTAKE MANIFOLD OR EGR VALVE GASKET LEAKING OR BAD FUEL INJECTOR IF YOU HAVE FUEL INJECTION.FAULTY MECHANICAL FUEL PUMP IF CARBURETOR.ALSO CARBURETOR FLOAT BOWL TOO LOW.

My car has eratic idle and acceleration jerking. It is a 2005 landrover freelander with 52,000 miles. Automatic transmission with a 2.5L engine.

It could be a few things. The EGR, IAC, TP sensor, vacuum leak, MAF sensor, air filter, bad ground to engine. Is the engine light on? If so were any codes retreived from it? What have you done or looked at so far?

Did you change spark plugs and wires? The fuel pump wouldn't cause a miss, and if it was MAF, it wouldn't run at all. It has to be either spark or timing / timing belt.

2003 Mazda Mpv jerks when idling abd breaking

Check to see if you have a MPV that has been included in the recall for the PCV line. Yes it is difficault to get to on your own, however they have special tools to reach behind the manifold to remove the line and install a new one. If you do it on your own it is very difficaul and will take a few hours as a I did before I found out about the recall. The service dept. should have asked you about the recall when you went to get the part from them. Where I got pissed was when they did replace the hose the faulty line had fouled the pcv valve and they did not bother to replace it and that is tucked under the intake manifold and under the fuel rails.
