If it is an evaporative cooler , then that is what the tank is for

Where do I start to look at when engine overheats when air conditioner is on


The A/C causes the engine to work harder (that's why fuel economy suffers when it is run).

If your car has an electric fan - make sure it runs when the engine is hot. If it does not - you may have trouble w/o the A/C running if is gets warmer outside. Look for fail fuses, disconnected plugs, etc.

You may also have flaky thermostat that is not opening fully when needed to exchange hot water in the engine block with cooler water in the radiator.

First, check the coolant level. You should find a semi-transparent reservoir / tank located under the hood that has a cap marked "Coolant". The side of the tank should have two indicator lines - one for HOT and one for COLD. If the engine has been run up to normal temperature (so that it can provide heat in the car), you should see the coolant level at or slightly above the HOT line. If the engine is cold - first thing in the morning or after sitting for several hours - the coolant should be at or slightly above the COLD line. View these levels while the engine is off and the car is parked on a flat, level surface. If there is not enough coolant - you will need to add the CORRECT type for your car.

Hot Engine
(1) With the engine hot, add enough coolant to the tank to bring the level to the HOT line. You may have to check the tank several times after driving if the coolant level in the radiator is down a great deal. NEVER open the radiator cap when the engine is warm or hot!

Cold Engine
(2) With the engine cold, add enough coolant to the tank to bring the level to reach COLD line. Additionally - with the engine cold - you can add coolant directly to the radiator by removing the cap. Start the engine, set heat in car to HOT and add coolant mixture to radiator until level comes up to the bottom of the filler neck. Once the engine is HOT (getting heat in the car) check and top off radiator as needed and put cap back on radiator.

Check the levels in the TANK several times over the next few days when cold. If the tank ever empties -you'll need to have this looked at by a mechanic.

make sure to check your coolant tank at every fill-up for a few fill-ups. This problem has a way of coming back if you don't top up your coolant at just the right times.

do a full system flush on the radiator and engine and the lines to the heater. flush them out. also change the thermostat and the temp switch, the temp switch sensor is the one with only one wire on it with either a 11mm or 13mm head on it depending what one was fitted. after it is flushed reconnect the pipes add the water and antifreeze, when all clean in the system the water should come out clean. 50/50 water antifreeze should be used. leave the top off the header tank and run the engine with the heater on number one. keep squashing the pipes as the engine warms up to help get the air out and keep the header tank full to the top. when the fan kicks in to cool the rad turn off the engine and leave to cool down when cool top up to the line and put the cap back on. wile you are doing the bleeding you should see the temp go up. if the heat goes to or above a 100 and the fan does not come on then the fan switch or motor may need changing, thermostats last for around 5 years, temp switches can last up to 5 years temp switch for the fan can be around 3 to 8 years.

Why is my add coolant light on


your coolant light is on because there is not enough coolant in the radiator. When the coolant is hot it expands and the excess water is pushed out into the reservoir and as it cools down the water is sucked back in and so keeps the top tank of the radiator full. However if you have a leak or a faulty radiator cap the water comes out ok but instead of sucking back in water it allows air in instead. Therefore you have a one way circuit of water out but no water back in. Your coolant light is telling you to check out the fault before you over heat the engine

Is there a bleed vaule to remove any air pockets in the cooling system?


you need to perform a cooling system pressure test on the cooling system and test the radiator cap, taurus's had problem the coolant tanks splitting, and defective caps, also have a co2 test performed to determine if you have a headgasket leaking exhaust gasses into cooling system 23yr ford tech..

I have a 1997 chrysler LHS and cant seem to get the air out of the motor and when i finally do get heat back in the car the heat gauge will go to H then cool back down when i pull over any one know what...


You probably have air in your cooling system. Some cooling system even have a means of burping or bleeding air off. With a cold engine remove the radiator cap. Have a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water available. Start car. slowly add the coolant mixture until the radiator is filled. wait and watch. if the coolant drops add more. you need the thermostat to open (to fully clear the system of air) which means you need the engine to come up to normal operating temp.

Change the thermostat,and bleed the cooling system or air.It does not need to be hot,and there are little bleeders on the engine,one is near the water outlet,it has a nut and a screw in the middle of it open it up,and pour coolant in the radiator,and watch for air and coolant to come out of the bleeder,and when all the air seems to be gone ,close the screw.Need to hold the nut while loosening the screw,and when you tighten the screw back down.Fill the radiator,and the reservoir full.The reservoir will have a full line on it,fill it up past the mark,about a quarter of the way more.Then start the engine set the heat to floor and turn it on low fan.Let it run,to see if the fans will come on,and they need to go off to let you know the engine is cooling back down.If they do not come on,right before the engine gets to hot,before the engine starts bubbling the reservoir tank,cut the engine off,and leave it for about 25 minutes.Then look at the reservoir to see if the coolant level has gone down,if so,add more coolant to the reservoir and start the engine up again,same procedure,it should start cooling then.

if your water pump is not working pull the return hose off of the reservoir and see if u get any flow at higher rpms also if you have no heat coming from heat vents the water pump is gone. could have bad t-stat. Does your a/c work? if not check your fuses on top of your battery see if one is blown. if so your cooling fans can cause you to overheat. if you have a air pocket in our system. fill first with water half way then add the pink coolant let run make sure no more bubbles. Back to the use thing. if that fuse is popped your cooling fans are bad as well you will need both fans to fix concern.

Run engine from cool, with rad cap off & heater on heat (not AC) and watch for circulation through rad when engine reaches normal operating temperature. Rev engine slightly from time to time for a couple of seconds, to increase flow & help bleed air out of system. Let it run for a while, and watch for increased flow in rad 2 or 3 times. Probably see air bubbles at same time.Hot coolant from engine comes in top, and back out bottom to engine after cooling in rad. The increased flow in rad ,indicates thermostat is opening & circulating cooler liquid back into engine. After 2 or 3 times put cap back on & fill return bottle only to line specified as warm/hot engine level.

Water pumps can stall out, but do you have air trapped in system.
Had you recently had the system "open" to replace hose, thermostat, temp sensor. Some Ford and GM have a bleeder screw on a high point in cooling system to bleed out trapped air.

Check your trans fluid color. Since the trans cooler is built into radiator (automatics)

IF the engine is overheating the trans CAN overheat
IF the trans is overheating the engine CAN overheat

They share the same cooling source and trans fluid gets hotter than oil, but yet it has a wimpy cooler built into radiator. Maybe add trans oil cooler to system.

Also outside temp affects the cool down rate of the radiator, ie...hot air trying to cool down hot radiator/engine is less effecting than cool air cooling hot radiator/engine
