That sounds like normal operation to me. might be low on charge therefore won't kick in on high speed due to not damaging the system and running the ac compressor to cause damage. have the system checked at a local shop. if ok, then recheck that everything is plugged in. all sensor on the ac lines. sounds like it might even be the low side cut off switch or plugged orfice tube or something along those lines...best left to a professional with a machine where they can monitor pressures, and proper operation and see what's going on.

I can tell ya, if the c-box isn't getting continuity,[check on firewall] on olds pre 2001. If you are, than the compresser needs to be purged, there is an air bubble in there that's a pain in the **** to get out. "GOOD LUCK''

AC compresser kicks in and out

You have a leak in the AC system and the refrigerant charge is low, this is a common failure on this make and model, have repaired dozens of them. You will need to replace the AC compressor and also reseal all the AC lines with the new and improved nitrile rubber green O ring seals. This job requires a car hoist and special tools an it is best left to an expert. Cost is about $1000.00

My AC is having trouble. It seems to only work once out of every 50 times I have tried to run it. I checked the freon with a AC gauge I bought and followed the instructions and it said the levels were up...

Hi, first of all, you will want to verify that your compressor is kicking on. Open hood and located A/C compressor. Have a helper start the engine and and then turn on A/C to maximum with blower at full speed. See if you hear and observe the compressor kick on. The outer portion of the compressor outside the pulley is the clutch. It should make a click and begin to spin along with the pulley. If it kicks on ok, does your cooling fan at the radiator kick on also? May need to run the engine a few minutes to verify that. If so and you are reading a full charge at the low pressure port at this time, you have air in the system and it should be completely emptied and then re-filled with around 3 LBS of R134a refrigerant until you read a low pressure side of 45-50 PSI. Then you will be blowing cold air.

Check the high and low pressure switches, either switch can cause the compressor not to run. Look for the switches in the high and low side lines. Hope this helps, let me know.
