The gear shift on my 1998 Lincoln Navigator is difficult to move out of park. It started about a month ago, when I tried to back out of my parking spot at home. Tonight, the vehicle died on me at a stop...

It can be either the shift cable or the Automatic parking brake release.
With your vehicle stalling it sounds like the parking brake release is leaking vacuum and causing stalling.

You can check with Autozone or Oreillys to see if there is an aftermarket part for that. Then locate the Auot release on your vehicle and when you take it off, slide the parts within the fixture to verify sticking.
