White smoke from BMW 740i exhaust

white were? the exhaust tip, or other spot, long pipe, name spot?
white, is steam or OIL.
oil smells like burnt oil and takes for ever to dispate
steam is water, and smells , sweet due to 50% glycol inside.
and goes away fast.
but all Gas engines make water at all the time running as a by product of combustion and for sure on cold days, some times full time cold
due to climate effects.
does your neighbors car smoke at same time, (look)
bingo , dew point.

all gas engine smoke cold started, (steam)

so first find out what it is,
take the dip stick out of a hot engine. stalled, drip it on the exhaust
see that smoke ,smell it? that is burning oil
now you know what you have, steam or oil. smoke.

Why is it that over revving results in more black smokes? Is it a good standard for smoke test to over rev? I own a 1 year and 5 months Mitsubishi Montero Sport with 13,000 kilometer mileage. Also, a Mazda...

The Effects of Over Revving a motor can be Catastrophic. I do not understand why the government would require someone to do such a test. Normal Emissions Testing is done at High (2100 - 2500) and the Idle (500-900).

Reason for Increased Smoke.... As you increase the internal pressure of the vehicle, you are creating a VACUUM and this is suckking the Oil past the rings, and anywhere else that it is causing the Vacuum.

Efffects of Over Revving van be Premature Failure of the engine (Could cost you $5-$8,000 to replace)... I would ask WHY so high... A Diesel would MAX OUT their RPM @ 4,000.

These people who are doing the test, ask them to show you where it says in WRITING 4,000... That is much higher than in the 4 states I have been certified to be an I/M Inspector

evaporitive emmision control system, covers ...the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon cannister.... the system prevents fuel vapor from escaping the vehicle, you have to do a "smoke test" to find the faulty part. unless you have the smoke generator, it's going to the garage... it wont effect regular driving...

My 1991 s-10 truck 4.3 ltr is smoking from exhaust, it stops after a few minutes

This is a common issue on older s-10's. You may have worn out or clogged up valve heads. The oil basically seeps into the combustion chamber. This is not an inexpensive fix. I'd say that if the small amount of smoke that comes out of the exhaust does not effect the way the truck performs, then leave it alone until you really have a problem. You will know when it really becomes a problem because as the amount of burning oil increases, a sticky film will be created over the spark plugs that may cause the truck to misfire. This will effect how the engine runs and kick your power in the head.

Jeep cherokee 2.8 CRD smoking. Replaced the injectors without any improvment. The garage told me that the smoke will stop after I have driven it for a couple of handred miles. Is this true.

from what you say, they said," it was the injectors that were faulty",hence changeing them, you could have tried a fuel additive/injector cleaner which could have had the same effect.....try a can to 5 gallons of fuel and if no improvement within 100 miles, give them HELL.smoke from a turbo engine could be dirty fuel/compression low/air leak from the turbo pipes/lazy turbo, etc but this engine is not exaclty the cleanest on expect a SMALL amount of smoke when cold or when accelerating HARD.

2004 1.6 vvt renault scenic smoking and juddering and ``check emissions`` message on dash and orange light ?

White smoke is a symptom of coolant entering the combustion chamber which usually indicates a blown head gasket. Blue smoke is a symptom of oil burning. Black smoke is a symptom of an overly rich fuel/air mixture. Have the ECU scanned with an OBD2 scan tool. This will retrieve the cade that has been set by the ECU. That code will tell you what part is being effected and where to start looking. If you see white smoke STOP driving this car immediately as serious engine damage will occur if you continue to run the engine. It must be repaired ASAP.

Why do i get black smoke when i boot it hard out of the exhaust

Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint when black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Black smoke out the tailpipe is the least cause for alarm. Excess fuel will usually effect engine performance, reduce fuel economy, and produce a fuel odor. Some of the causes of excess fuel are a carburetor that is out of adjustment, a faulty fuel pump, a leaky fuel injector, or a faulty engine computer or computer sensor. If black smoke is present, check the engine oil to make sure excess fuel has not contaminated it. Do not start the engine if a heavy, raw fuel smell can be detected in the engine oil.

2001 E220 CDI exhaust tail pipe black smoke on acceleration

Black smoke is almost always an indication that the air/ fuel mix (ratio), is too rich. I would try to find out if the just cleaned the injectors or were they replaced. Cleaning injectors and sometimes leave irregularly shaped orifices. Besure the air filter is clean. This can effect mix also.
Good Luck and hope this helps.
