DID THIS PROBLEM HAPPEN BEFORE YOU REPLACED THE SWITCH? IF IT DID, THAN SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A BAD STARTER SHORTING INTERNALLY
LET ME KNOW HOW YOU MAKE OUT AND GOOD LUCK.

SOURCE: 1989 jeep wrangler. New engine and transmission.

What the dealer told you sounds strange but the only thing I can think of that might do that is if the flex plate (flywheel) was put in backwards, if it has an off-set (like a wheel and tire assembly) it may be too close to the starter gear. BUT that still does not tell me why it wasn't doing it all the time. It is weird problems like yours that make me wish I could go there and actually see it.I hope after the shop finishes it works out well!!!

SOURCE: Turn key and starter stays engaged. Turn key off

The starter solenoid is failing. Sooner or later the starter will probably not disengage after you turn the key off. Then you'll have to disconnect the battery in a hurry. It's no fun. And at that point the whole starter will probably have to be replaced. Depending on how long it takes you to unhook the battery. Trust me. That is no way to start your day. It's really bad for your blood pressure. Good Luck.

Does it keep cranking like when first starting or is it running normally and when you turn off the key it just keeps running if it's the first one the solenoid on the fender is N/G the engines running but the starter is still cranking trying to turn the engine over but it's already running///// next if it's running normally after starting no grinding from the starter being engaged like I just described then the ignition switch on the steering column is N/G//// THIS IS NOT THE IGNITION KEY SWITCH THAT YOU PUT THE KEY IN TO START THE TRUCK THIS IS LOCATED DOWN ABOUT HALFWAY BETWEEN THE STEERING WHEEL AND YOUR FEET THERE IS A ROD THAT COMES FROM THE KEY SWITCH WITH THE KEY THAT WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY YOU ARE MOVING THIS ROD WHICH MAKES THE SWITCH MOVE TO THE POSITION TO START THE TRUCK WHEN YOU LET GO THE SPRING INSIDE LET'S THE SWITCH MOVE TO THE RUN POSITION SO WHAT'S WRONG HERE IS THE SWITCH IS NOT OPENING WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY TO THE OFF POSITION IF IT'S A NEW SWITCH YOU HAVE TO ADJUST IT TO GET IT TO SHUT OFF THE RIGHT WAY IF IT'S AN OLD ONE REPLACE IT BUT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED BEFORE AND THE FASTENERS LOSSENED AND MIGHT NEED TO BE ADJUSTED AGAIN AND TIGHTENED TO HOLD IT IN PLACE GOOD LUCK! Starter stays engaged

It could be the starter or the key switch. You would need to know if the starter solenoid is getting power from the key when the key is off to know. It should not be getting power if the key is off.

I have a 99 Ford Superduty 7.3 Diesel. It is making a really bad grinding/screeching sound just after it starts and is warming up. It wouldn't ******* off all the way even after the key was turned

indicates that the starter motor is stuck in the ring gear
possibly faulty starter relay or starter solenoid
pull the starter as the pinion over ride clutch is probably damaged ( noise ) and have the start circuit and relay checked
have the starter bench tested for serviceability by an accredited auto electrician

Starter staying engaged after starting on 2005 malibu ls

check to engagement wire at the starter, make sure that power is only present when key is in the start position.if this is the case, then your sarter bendix is hanging up on the flywheel, this is caused by either inproper shiming where the starter is bolted to the block, or having the wrong bendix on the starter, there or several different bendix s general motors uses, also if the return spring in the solonoid is broken or not strong enough the starter could hang up. if the problem is power continuing to feed the solonoid with the key in the run position you could have a bad or out of adjustment ignition switch, since the power feeds the solonoid directly from the ignition switch, other than the neutral switch on the colomn

Its a solenoid...it engages the bendix and truck starts...bendix should retract because power to it gets shut off by ignition switch going to "run".

Only way bendix would stay engaged or get a signal to keep turning ???
Bad contacts in ignition switch...maybe ??
Start relay in under hood power distribution panel has hot or welded contacts ?

I've gotta think about this one...hope this gives some help...
