Question about 2000 Renault 181

1 Answer

I have a Renault Scenic 1.9 dci 2001. When braking the vehicle begins to slow down but the engine will suddenly increase in power pulling the car. If the brake is release then the power drops. Normal braking can be resumed. If the car is braked to a halt, the extra power being disconnected by dipping the clutch then the revs are found to be at 1500. When the brake is released then the revs drop. The EGF valve has been cleaned to no effect.

The first thing you need to do is have the engine control module scanned for fault codes, you will need a code reader for an OBD2 engine control system, then post the fault codes here. I would also see if the engine has fuel pressure, the test port is in the pipe that supplies fuel to the injectors under the hood top of the engine.

WHEN TO CHANGE TIMING BELT ON RENAULT SCENIC GRAND DCI MODEL & DO THE PETROL MODELS HAVE TIMING BELTS OR A TIMING CHAIN?

The Renault schedule for timing belts on the Scenic is 72,000 miles or 5 years. This applies to both the petrol and DCI models as both have timing belts not chains.

However, please be aware that it is common knowledge in the trade not to let the interval go past 40,000 miles because these engines are renowned for snapping belts at any time after 40k resulting in serious engine damage.

Haynes (who are renowned for their service manuals on many models) recommend a maximum interval of 36,000 miles between belts on this model which is exactly half that of what Renault say!

This information from Haynes is backed up by experience and reports from the trade on the common and unfortunate experiences of customers experiencing belt breakage at 45 k and below.

Hope this helps. Please do leave a vote for the solution. Thanks.

Engine revs remain high or increase when braking

Have you tried checking your throttle positioning sensor. Possible vacuum leak or check for carbon build up in the throttle body not letting the throttle valve shut all the way.
