Question about Mitsubishi Galant

2 Answers

I have a 1999 Mitsubshi Galant that blowes white/purple smoke after it has idled. Lets say at a stop light, or for the morning crank up. I am also having to add oil in between oil changes. Is there any hope for my car, or should I start shopping?

If you're sure it's "smoke", then it's probably burning oil. But most likley it's water vapor. When an engine is first started and the air is cold, the water vapor in the exhaust will create visible steam. Automotible exhaust primarily consists of carbon dioxide and water vapor. If the engine and exhaust system are cold, the exhaust will be cooler when it comes out and it can create a cloud of water vapor.
However, if it's not water vapor, as I mentioned above, it could be oil smoke. If that's the case you need an engine rebuild since you probably have bad rings.

Why is my car blowing white/blue smoke after standing in idle for extended period. no smoke present while driving.

Hello Barry, Two causes for your problem comes to mind. Smoke after initial start up and/ or extended idle could mean bad valve seals. Some time ago I had a car with a leaking vacuum modulator on the transmission. Intake vacuum was sucking the trans fluid into the intake manifold. Your car may or may not have a transmission modulator. White smoke usually means it is burning engine coolant.

I drive a 2001 galant with a 4 cyl. i cross the mexico/usa border about 3 times per week. after idling for about 1 hour, light blue smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe. what could this be? the car uses a...

Blue smoke is an indication that you are burning oil. This typically happens through the rings on the pistons but can also be caused from valves. If the vehicle is running ok then it is most likely blowing by the rings. The vehicle probably has high miles and the way to stop the blue smoke is replacing the rings which can get very expensive. This does not mean that the vehicle will tear up tomorrow though.

Bad idle air control valve. Most likely needs to be replaced. I'm guessing you have around 125K miles on your Galant, right? See other posts for solution.

the weakest link from water entering engine is intake manifold losing its torque. their are four water ports right next to valve ports. two in front two at rear of intake manifold. they warp fairly easy.so check before re installing

Why is my 1999 mitsubishi galant V4 overheating??

Both white smoke coming from the tailpipe and the engine temperature overheating are signs the cylinder head gasket is blown. You should have a block test performed to verify.

My engine is smoking when i start engine on mornings

sounds like valve guids are wearing out.. drying out and cracking. only fix is to replace them. or try a heavier oil. sometimes that will help depending on the severity of the problem.
