Replace the A/C compressor if the Magnetic clutch is bad. You can try and take it apart to clean but you will never know for sure if it will bereliable. The system will have to be drained to replace. Also if it is not a R134a system you may have to have it converted. Seals and such replaced.

The mechanic tells me my clutch is slipping and needs rreplacing 85,000 km. How do I know if this is reliable info? I feel nothing

TEst for slipping clutch is travel about 30 mph. press clutch, shift to 3rd, rev engine pretty high and release clutch, at the time of clutch release, floor throttle. If the engine continues to race, clutch not grabbing porperly, if the clutch works properly, the engine will be slowed and engauged.
You can always get a 2nd opinon from another shop.

the 85,000 mile coutch worn out issue dependes entirely on driving habits of the operators.

Just bought a 1985 jeep cherokee 2.5l cluch won't engauge. They said they replaced everything for the cluch. WEhat shoul I check short of buying a manual.

Check the Slave cylinder operation. If the gears engauge with the car off it is a clutch problem not the trans.

The starter has a thing called a starter drive. It operates with a over running clutch that is a safety that keeps it from over speeding when still engaged with a started engine. That drive needs replaced, the clutch is bad.

AC compressor does not engage after you turn the motor off and then start it again.

it's not suposed too for several minutes this keeps you from starting it with load of ac compressor on

if it does not come back after a few minutes ck refrigerant pressure at low side port (static no compressor engauged) it's gotta be over 10 psi or press switch thinks it's M/T and won't engauge compressor
add refridgerant
